（LAダウンタウンの貴金属街にある仕事場近くで見かけた、シトロエンSMです、状態が良く、ピカッと光ってました。）
＊再建現場の2本のオーク問題ーーー＞『アーボリスト・樹護士』の大活躍
（12月21日、樹護士『R』さんの仲介の下、枝打ち職人が活躍しました。）
＃アーボリストの仲介で、
LA群の消防署所属の樹木係と折衝
12月2日の午前11時、
アーボレストの『R』さんと、LA群消防署所属の樹木係の2人と
全焼した自宅の跡地で落ち合い、『R』さんの仲介で自己紹介の後、
私と妻を除く3人（旧知の仲）で、
＊現場のオーク2本の立ち合い調査（オークの詳しい現状を書類に記入）
＊別件の群からの奨励金の現状や内輪話など、、、
を話し合い、書類に署名して、
30分程度で一件落着、といった感じでした。
その後、
この書類が、伐採業者にたいする伐採許可書となり、
今後はこんな感じで、進んで行きます。
＊『R』さんから推薦された伐採業者2ー3社の中から適当なものを選び、
（私たちの場合は、彼女に一任しましたが）
＊彼女の立会いの下、新築物件に干渉する部分を、オークの生育を妨げない範囲で伐採、
＊伐採前と伐採後の写真＋伐採状況の詳細レポートを作っていただき、
＊アルタディナにあるLA群の臨時オフィスに私たちと一緒に出向いて、
再建用の建築許可が取れるよう折衝していただく。
といった流れになります。
枝打ちと、書類政策に3－4週間かかり、2026年の1月半ばごろまでにはLA群のオフィスに行けるだろう、ということでした。彼女の職員との慣れ親しんだ話しぶりが、私たち夫婦に安心感を与えてくれました。嬉
＃枝打ち完了：かなりすっきりしました。
12月21日に、『R』さん立会いの下、
自宅の2本のオークに対して彼女の指示に従い伐採処理が執り行われました。
以下に、伐採前と伐採後の写真を添えておきます。
ーーーー＞大きな幹が伐採され、木の周囲がかなりすっきりしました。
（伐採前:ガレージ側のオークの木、上下に伸びる太めの幹が10本近くもありました）

＊再建設計の進捗:キッチンの天井を下げるーーーー＞大屋根の高さも下げることに！！
(大屋根を2フィート下げることで、居間の天窓部分が狭くなりすぎる問題を、解決すり為のアイデアをスケッチに表しました。－－－－→問題解決のプロセスを楽しんでます。）
＃再建設計の進捗:
その後も自宅の設計に、
SV事務所さんとメールや電話でやり取りして、外観の設計を詰めていきました。
ちなみに、11月の終わりに送ったメールには、
私たちから以下のような提案がありました。
（これが最終変更と考え、相当吟味しました）
＊キッチンの天井を60cm低くして構造材を隠してーーー＞シーリングライトが入るようにーーーー＞掃除も楽に出来るよう、、
（結果として、この部分が低くなることにより、居間とダイニングの天井の高さがより強調されるように、メリハリになります）
＊浴室内のお風呂の位置を北西の角に移動してもらうーーー＞（庭の景色が見えるよう）
＊ダイニングから洗面所へ向かうドアと洗面所から浴室へのドアをーー＞ポケットドアに（トイレを使うときの邪魔にならないよう）
＊キッチンのアイランド部分の方角を、南向きに変更（見晴らしがいい）
＊北側のトイレ横の壁を東へ1フィート移動ーーー＞キッチンが少し広くなるように（廊下があまりに広過ぎるのも却って何なんで、、、）
＊リビング南の日除け・トレラスの長さを半分に＋トレラスの桟を南北向きに
＊西側の入り口の庇の出っ張りを無くす（高すぎて雨の時も無意味）
＃変更済みの立面図
SVさんからすぐに変更済みの
＊西側立面図と、
＊キッチン部分のパース予想画が、
送られてきました。
（以前の西側立面図：キッチン西側の天窓あり）
（下の図：キッチンの天井を低くした後ーー＞天窓なし

＃問題点発覚！！
今回の一番大きな変更点、
＊キッチンの天井を60cm下げることで、
＊キッチンの西側にあった大きな天窓が無くなり、
結果として、
西側立面図で、
大屋根の最高部が異常に高く、
見えてしまうのに気づき、
妻の意見も聞いてみたところ、、
彼女も
『極、初めのころから大屋根の高さに違和感があり、焼失前の外観の中で、屋根が直線的で低いのが大好きだったので、なんとかしたい。』
ということなので、
試しに、
大屋根の最高部を2フィート（約60cm）低くした立面図を書いてみて、
SVさんに送ってみました。
幸いSVさんにも、
大屋根をできる限り低くするアイデアに賛同していただき、
その後さらに何度もメールを交換したのち、
（「あちらが立てば、こちらが立たず」の連続で、、、、、）
＃年末のプレゼント:最終決定稿！
遂に大みそかの夜、
SVさんから以下の最新見取り図＋立面図が送られてきました！！
こんな感じで、
最新版は私たちの望みをかなえてくれていました。
＊大屋根の最高部が2フィート弱低くなり、大屋根の右下がりの勾配が、自宅西側の道路の勾配にほぼ等しく、
ーーーーーーーー＞非常に腑に落ちるデザインとなりました。
（これ以上低くすると、エアコンなどを収納する屋根裏が不足します）
＊東側の立面図の天窓の位置と大きさが理想的に＋ダイニング東のスライドドアとその上の細い窓のバランスも完璧です。
＊見取り図（上面図）のリビング南のスライド式窓が4組になり、全部を西側のポケットドアに収納可能に
＊リビングとキッチンの間の廊下の幅がちょうどいい幅になってます。
＊リビング北の天窓（クリア・ストリー）の高さがぎりぎりで既製品サイズにとどまりました。
ーーー＞屋根の高さを低くしたため、この兼ね合いが難しかったです。
敷地内の2本のオークの問題が持ち上がる中、
SVさんとのコミュニケーションを密にして、
デザイナー冥利に尽きる、
「問題解決（Problem-Solving）」の段階を
楽しませていただきました。
「彼方がたてば、こちらが立たず」といったシーソーゲーム的な興奮を味わうのは工業デザインや自動車デザインの最終段階の常ですので、
今回図らずも自宅再建プロジェクトでそのわくわく感を味わえたのは、
嬉しい驚きでした。

VSさんへ外観デザインの最終的な了承を伝え、
内装材料の選定段階に進んでいきます。

# Through the arborist’s mediation,
negotiations with the tree department of the LA County Fire Department
At 11:00 AM on December 2nd,
I met with Mr. R from Arborest and two members of the LA County Fire Department’s Tree Division
at the site of our completely burned-down home. After introductions facilitated by Mr. R,
the three of them (who knew each other well) and I (excluding my wife)
* Conducted an on-site inspection of the two oak trees (documenting their detailed current condition)
* Discussing the status of county incentive funds for other matters and some internal talk…
We signed the documents,
and it all wrapped up in about 30 minutes.
After that,
this document becomes the felling permit for the tree removal contractor,
and things will proceed like this going forward.
＊Select an appropriate company from the 2-3 logging contractors recommended by Ms. R,
(in our case, we entrusted the choice entirely to her)
＊Under her supervision, we’ll cut down the oak trees that interfere with the new construction, ensuring their growth isn’t hindered.
＊We’ll have them prepare before-and-after photos plus a detailed report on the logging situation.
＊She’ll accompany us to the LA District’s temporary office in Altadina
to negotiate and secure the building permit for reconstruction.
That’s the general flow.
Pruning and paperwork took 3-4 weeks, and we were told we could visit the LA office around mid-January 2026. Her familiar way of speaking with the staff gave us a sense of reassurance. We were delighted.

On December 21st, with Ms. R present,
the two oak trees at our home were felled according to her instructions.

#Renovation Progress:
After that, we continued working on the house design with SV Architects via email and phone, finalizing the exterior design.
By the way, in an email sent at the end of November,
we made the following proposals.
(We considered this the final revision and scrutinized it thoroughly)
* Lower the kitchen ceiling by 60cm to conceal structural beams → Allowing ceiling lights to be installed → Making cleaning easier…
(As a result, lowering this section will create a more pronounced contrast, emphasizing the ceiling height in the living and dining areas)
* Move the bathtub position within the bathroom to the northwest corner → (To allow views of the garden)
* Replace the door from the dining area to the washroom and the door from the washroom to the bathroom with pocket doors (to avoid obstructing the toilet when in use)
* Change the orientation of the kitchen island to face south (for better views)
* Move the wall next to the north-facing toilet 1 foot eastward → To slightly enlarge the kitchen (since the hallway being too wide is counterproductive…)
* Reduce the length of the south living room sunshade/terrace by half + reorient terrace slats north-south
* Remove the overhang projection at the west entrance (too high and useless during rain)
#Revised Elevation Drawings
SV promptly sent the revised

＊Perspective rendering of the kitchen area.

#Issue Discovered!!
The most significant change this time:
* Lowering the kitchen ceiling by 60cm
* Eliminated the large skylight on the west side of the kitchen
Consequently,
on the west elevation drawing,
the highest point of the main roof appeared abnormally tall.
After discussing this with my wife,
she also said,
‘Ever since the very beginning, I felt uneasy about the height of the main roof. I loved how the roof was straight and low in the pre-fire exterior, so I really want to fix this.’
So,
as a test,
I drew an elevation showing the highest point of the main roof lowered by 2 feet (about 60cm)
and sent it to SV.
Fortunately, SV also agreed with the idea of lowering the main roof as much as possible.
After exchanging numerous emails since then
(it was a constant case of “if you fix one thing, another breaks”……)
#Year-End Gift: Final Draft!
Finally, on New Year’s Eve night,
SV sent us the latest site plan + elevation drawings!!
Like this,
the latest version fulfilled our wishes.
＊The highest point of the main roof was lowered by just under 2 feet, and the downward slope on the right side of the main roof is now nearly identical to the slope of the road on the west side of our house,
————————> resulting in a design that makes perfect sense.
(Lowering it any further would have reduced the attic space needed for air conditioning units, etc.)
＊The position and size of the skylight on the east elevation are ideal, and the balance between the sliding door east of the dining area and the narrow window above it is perfect.
＊The floor plan shows four sliding windows on the south side of the living room, all of which can be stored within the pocket doors on the west side.
＊The hallway width between the living room and kitchen is just right.
＊The height of the north skylight (clear stream) barely fits within standard sizes.
ーーー＞ This balance was difficult to achieve due to the lowered roof height.
Amidst the issue of the two oak trees on the property,
we maintained close communication with SV,
truly fulfilling the designer’s calling,
enjoying the “Problem-Solving” phase
to the fullest.
Experiencing that seesaw-like excitement—where one solution requires sacrificing another—is common in the final stages of industrial or automotive design.
So, unexpectedly finding that thrill in my own home reconstruction project
was a delightful surprise.
