Food Review: “Dim Sum-Style Chinese Cuisine Tailored to Japanese Tastes” — “Jumbo Pork & Shrimp Siu-Mai” from [Lunasia: Dim Sum Chinese Cuisine]

(The interior and exterior—which are wonderfully [modern yet warm], reminiscent of a “hall of fame for modern Chinese cuisine”—really catch the eye. On top of that, the service and prices are outstanding. It’s a restaurant that checks all four boxes: excellent flavor, generous portions, a satisfying meal, and it’s easy on the wallet!)

My absolute favorite item on the Chinese menu is

this!

They moved this year to the corner of Lake Avenue and Colorado Avenue in Pasadena,

“LunAsia’s:

Jumbo Shumai”

I love this dim sum dish so much that
I basically go there just to order the 10-piece shumai platter,
and then end up ordering other dishes as well!! (lol)
(I can’t exactly order 30 pieces of shumai by myself, after all…)

This place, 【LunAsia】, is

* a renowned dim sum restaurant where
* the other menu items are fantastic,
* and the service and atmosphere are top-notch,

but this time, I’m going to focus my review
on these “Jumbo Shumai”!

So, here’s how it goes—
keeping it simple:

* Appearance of the Jumbo Shumai:
* Taste of the Jumbo Shumai:
* Other Dishes:
* General Impressions of the Restaurant:

* Appearance of the Jumbo Shumai: Majestic—they’re so big they almost spill out of the photo…

Whenever I visit Renesia
and place an order, for some reason I’m reminded of a scene I saw long ago in a movie or a comedy show,

where “a high school student lies about their age to buy condoms,
and frantically buys them along with unrelated items.”

For some reason, it gives me a bittersweet feeling. (lol)

#Appearance of the Shumai:

Now, for the highlight of this post:
the appearance of the “Jumbo Shumai with Shrimp and Pork”…

Contrary to my expectations,
it’s not really that surprising…

In fact,

* Aside from their sheer size—they must be over 5 cm in diameter—
* For some reason, they don’t look very impressive in photos,
* They’re just ordinary shumai topped with “light, fluffy filling” and “tobiko,”
* resulting in a rather unremarkable appearance.

Because of how unremarkable it looks,
even though I’ve visited many times since the fire, I couldn’t get a good photo,
so I ended up not being able to write a review…
(This time, I managed to choose a seat with bright lighting and gave it another try.)

* Taste: It’s the kind of thing I could eat forever…

It’s a bit embarrassing at my age, but
ever since I was a child, I’ve had a tendency to “gorge” on things I really like,

and when I eat these “Jumbo Shumai,”

memories come flooding back of when my grandmother and mother used to tell me as a child,

“Don’t just eat the same thing over and over—eat a balanced variety of foods,”

and I’m reminded of their advice…

#Taste:

Now, it’s finally time for the taste test…

I split the large [chunk] in two with my chopsticks,
and when I took a bite of one half…

* Juices gush out from the inside,
* The chewy texture of the pork and its sweetness,
* The rough, chewy bite of the shrimp and its deep umami,
* Create a wonderful rhythm of textures and flavors…
* Then, when the “popping sensation” of the tobiko and
* the “chewy texture” of the outer crust are added,

I’m completely satisfied—and even beyond that…

My mind reaches a “state of supreme bliss.”

Before I know it,
interspersing them with squid rings and vegetables,

I can’t stop eating—two, three, and counting!

There,
amidst the bitter memories of my childhood—
when I was personally a bit of a picky eater—

and since this goes against

the “rules of the low-carb diet” my doctor has recently been recommending,

I feel a double sense of guilt! (Tears of laughter)

* Impressions and Random Thoughts: The Halloween Mini-Concert Feast…

On the Friday night we visited,
coincidentally, a Halloween mini-concert was taking place,

*featuring a violinist dressed as the Phantom of the Opera and
*a pianist playing the role of a witch,

performing jazz arrangements of movie soundtracks!

(When I asked one of the male waiters, he told me that this restaurant
features live music every weekend during dinner.)

The beautiful modern interior design,
paired with live jazz music…

On top of that, the food features

* exceptional quality,
* generous portion sizes,
* fresh ingredients, and
* delicate seasoning—perfect for Japanese tastes.

Needless to say,

the signature dish,

the “Giant Shrimp Shumai,”

is truly magnificent.

This is a wonderful dim sum restaurant that represents the best of Pasadena!!

If you love shumai,

you absolutely
must give it a try!

Regarding this blog and its content:

My goal in writing these blog posts is to clarify my personal, distinctive criteria for evaluation—including my somewhat quirky perspectives—as shaped by my involvement with three-dimensional art (including cuisine), and to document how I have satisfied and fulfilled my curiosity and desire to explore “beauty and deliciousness.”

Consequently, while I pay meticulous attention to the numbers, dates, and detailed data that appear in my articles, it is possible that I may occasionally make significant errors or misunderstandings. In particular, key specifications and dates in automotive articles can often be confusing, so I would appreciate it if you would consider them for reference only.

For my part, I feel as though I’m inserting dates and data into the articles as objective material to create a “flow” that connects my personal assessments of exterior design and taste to the broader themes explored in the latter half of the piece. What I ultimately prioritize are the new “perspectives” and “unexpected connections between pieces of information” that emerge from the chaotic jumble of memories in my own mind. The various data points are needed secondarily as part of that “flow” to generate that momentum.

As a slight digression, in the world of rakugo—which I love—there’s a playful format called “sandaibana,” where a performer weaves a single story using three topics solicited on the spot from the audience. I feel like I’m doing something similar here, using the characteristics of three-dimensional sculptures and (the flavors of dishes) as my prompts. The countless ideas that flit through my mind during this process are completely unexpected and delightful; they often drastically change the content of future articles or lead to new developments.

How This Blog Works:
“Spots and Lines of Curiosity x Whimsical Mental Circuits = Unexpected New Developments”

This blog may be a bit self-indulgent, but I hope you’ll continue to follow along.

Note: To create the “flow” described above, I take as many of the necessary photos as possible using my own miniature cars and home-cooked meals. However, I do borrow the absolute minimum of other illustrations and photos from other bloggers’ posts and company websites. (I edit them to fit the article’s content and post them at the lowest possible resolution.) If there are any issues, please contact me, and I will remove them immediately.

Addendum 2: You are free to use the photos of die-cast cars and other images (taken by me) featured in this blog’s posts in any way you like without permission. I create these posts with the understanding that my personal creativity is my own.
