重機が入りました。自宅の瓦礫撤去作業：第2回

米国陸軍公兵部隊チームによる瓦礫撤去作業の2日目

5月31日、全焼した自宅からの米国陸軍公兵部隊チームによる瓦礫撤去作業の2日目となります。

当初半日程度で完了すると勝手に考えていましたが、がれき撤去作業とそれに続く土壌改善用の処置には丸二日以上かかるようで、2日目の今日、午前9時ごろ妻と出かけてみるとすでに重機による基礎部分（スラブ）の撤去作業が進んでいました。

昨日は、
＊全焼した自宅本体とガレージ部分に散乱した鉄くず、陶器などの瓦礫と、燃え残ってまだ立っているブロックの壁を重機と人力での撤去して、ダンプトラックに埃の出ないよう積載の上、シートカバーで厳重に覆って、15マイルほど東にあるモンロビア市にある臨時の瓦礫保管現場に運ばれました。

今日は、
＊昨日きれいに瓦礫が取り除かれ、あらわになった自宅本体とガレージのコンクリートの基礎部分（30センチ以上の厚さ）を重機を使い掘り起こし、細かく砕いて、ダンプカーに積載の上、昨日同様モンロビアの保管場所に運びます。

迫力あるショベルカー作業の見学

＊ショベルカーに特別な先端部（ショベルがざる状になっていて、爪のようなものでつかむことが可能）をつけ、

＊器用に土中に埋まった暑さ30センチ以上もあるコンクリートの板を、割り、つかみ、所定位置に積み上げる。

といった作業を30分ほど子供のように見入ってしまいました。（近くからもう一人の隊員が、先端部が触れるコンクリート周辺に放水してホコリのたつのと、ショベルの劣化を防いでいたのが印象的でした。）

後方では残りのスタッフの方々が土壌処理のための土嚢や、地質改良用の薬剤を準備されてました。

夏日となり、非常に暑い中懸命に働いてくださった隊員の皆様、また自宅周辺への侵入者を遮るために警備にあったって下さった警備員の方、本当にお疲れさまでした。

次回は瓦礫撤去、地質改善処理後の自宅跡地の姿をレポート予定です。

the second day of debris removal work by a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers team

May 31 marks the second day of debris removal work by a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers team at my completely burned-down home.

Initially, I had assumed the work would be completed in half a day, but it appears the debris removal and subsequent soil improvement measures will take more than two full days. When my wife and I went out around 9 a.m. today, the second day, we found that the heavy machinery had already begun removing the foundation (slab) portion.

Yesterday,
* The debris scattered across the burned-out main house and garage—including scrap metal, ceramics, and other debris—along with the remaining block walls that were still standing, were removed using heavy machinery and manual labor. The debris was loaded onto dump trucks in a way that minimized dust, covered with tarps, and transported to a temporary debris storage site in Monrovia, approximately 15 miles east.

Today,
* The concrete foundation of the main house and garage (over 30 centimeters thick), which was exposed after the debris was cleared yesterday, will be excavated using heavy machinery, crushed into small pieces, loaded onto dump trucks, and transported to the same storage site in Monrovia as yesterday.

Observing the powerful excavator work

* A special attachment (a shovel with a sieve-like tip and claw-like grippers) was attached to the excavator,

* Skillfully breaking apart, gripping, and stacking concrete slabs buried in the ground, over 30 centimeters thick, at the designated location.

I watched these operations for about 30 minutes, captivated like a child. (It was impressive to see another crew member nearby spraying water around the concrete where the attachment touched to prevent dust from flying and to protect the shovel from wear and tear.)

In the background, the remaining staff members were preparing soil bags for soil treatment and chemicals for soil improvement.

Despite the scorching summer heat, the crew members worked tirelessly, and the security guards who patrolled the area to prevent intrors from entering the vicinity of the residence truly deserve our gratitude.

In the next report, we will cover the removal of debris and the condition of the residence site after geological improvement measures.
