第19回目の今回から、7－8回の予定で、『2ドアクーペの系譜』と題しまして、各国のお国柄や、外観デザインの個性が強く表れる、高級2ドア（GT）クーペについてお話ししてみたいです。（好みのカテゴリーのため、かなり車種が増える可能性あり、、、）

ジェネラル・モータースの
キャデラック事業部から、

2013年に発表された、コンセプトカー（先行開発車）が、

キャデラック・
エルミラージュュです。

キャデラックの最高級2ドアクーペにつけられていた、今は亡き名跡:

キャデラック・
エルドラドに
肖ってつけられたそうです。

数あるエルドラドの中でも、私が一番好きな、
1967年型をイメージして
デザインされたのもうれしいサイド・ストーリーです。

2013年のペブルビーチのコンクール・デレガンス（8月18）直後、

このコンセプトカーをネット上でみた時、
あまりにも全盛期のGM的なデザインだったため、
思わずにっこりしたことを思い出します。

それでは、GM・デザイン遺伝子満載の、
エルミラージュについてこんな感じで進めていきます。

＃外観デザイン: 

2013年当時GMグローバル・デザイン副社長であったエド・ウェルバーンの統括のもと、ニキ・スマートがリードデザイナーとして、キャデラックの将来のフラッグシップ像を示すモデルとしてペブルビーチのコンコード・デレガンスで初公開されました。

1967年型「キャデラック・エルドラド」にインスパイアされた、長く優雅なボンネットとショートデッキが特徴のクラシックなプロポーションに、極めて今日的な複雑なニュアンス溢れるフクヨかな丸みのあるボディー断面を見事に融合させ、引き締まったフェンダーライン、垂直方向のヘッドライトとテールライトなどキャデラック・デザイン部の掲げるデザイン哲学：『アート＆サイエンス』を文字通り体現する『優雅で賢い』指標的デザインとなっています。

名前の由来：
エルミラージュ（El Mirage）というカリフォルニア州の乾燥湖（高速走行テストで有名）に由来します。

エンジン:
4.5リッター V型8気筒ツインターボエンジンを搭載し、最高出力は約500hp、最大トルクは約678Nm（500 lb-ft）を発揮します。

ボディサイズ:
全長 約5,207mm（205インチ）、全幅 約1,930mm（76インチ）という堂々たる体格で、重量は約1,814kg（4,000ポンド）です。

内装:
ミッドセンチュリーモダンな家具から着想を得たキャメル色の本革、ブラジリアン・ローズウッドのウッドパネル、バックライト付きチタンなど、贅を尽くした素材が使用されています。

生産状況:
市販化を望む声が多くありましたが、最終的に量産はされませんでした。ただし、そのデザイン要素や「オメガ」と呼ばれるプラットフォーム技術は、後に登場したフラッグシップセダン「CT6」などに受け継がれました。

（ナイフのブレード状のフロントフェンダーから緩やかに落ち、リアタイヤハウス3/4位の高さで一旦終わり、リアウインドウの見切り線から再び始まりリアフェンダー上のブレードとなりテールライトにつながります。）

＃『マテルのホットホイール』恐るべし！！

2013年のペブルビーチでの発表以来、
色々なメディアで、エルドラドを愛でた日々でしたが、

生産車では無いこともあり、
立体のミニカーなどで実際に触ることはできませんでした、、、、泣

アメリカ車やコンセプトカーをモデル化することが多い、

フランスのNOREV社に一縷の望みをかけてみましたが、
音沙汰はなく、
そのまま忘れかけていました、、、、

そんな中、
1/64のミニカー用のカスタムホイールとタイヤのセット
を検索していた時偶然に、今回写真撮影に使用させていただいた、

マテル社製、ホットホイール:

『キャデラック・エルミラージュ』を
発見しました。

実際に、イーベイを通してメタリックホワイト以外の、
5種類を入手しまして、そのボディー造形の正確さと、偶然かもしれませんが、スケールもほぼ1/64ということで、早速、マッチボックス車のマーキュリークーガーからホイールを移植して、色々改造してできたのが、今回のレッド・メタリックのエルミラージュです。

＃デザインの鬼才：『ニキ・スマート』の足跡

ニキ・スマートはイギリスの自動車デザイナーで、
奇抜かつ大胆なデザインで各界にその名をとどろかせております。

＊コベントリー大学在学中に、アリエル・モーター・カンパニーの社長であり上級輸送デザイン講師でもあるサイモン・サンダースと共同でアリエル・アトムのデザインを指揮した

＊1999年にロンドンのロイヤル・カレッジ・オブ・アートで自動車デザインの修士号を取得。1997年にトム・ウォーキンショー・レーシングにデザイナーとして移籍し、1998年にはフォード・モーター・カンパニーへ移籍

＊2019年までカリフォルニア州ロサンゼルスにあるゼネラルモーターズ先行デザインチームのエクステリアデザインマネージャーを務め、

＊2010年のキャデラック・アーバン・ラグジュアリー・コンセプト、

＊2011年に発表されたハイブリッド電気コンセプトカー、キャデラック・シエルのデザインを監督した。

個人的に彼の作風が大の好みで、奇抜で、けれんみ溢れる外観と、技術的に裏づけされた現実主義の両面を持ち合わせる、彼のデザイン哲学に常に感銘を受け、

初期の、コンベントリー大学、RCA在学時の作品から、
最近のバイク会社経営に至るまでを常に追っかけてきました。

今後も楽しみなデザイナーです。

今回も大ネタということで、
落語の【三題噺】形式で行ってみましょう。

エ～！１席おつきあいのほどを申し上げます、

栄枯盛衰 あんど 捲土重来、などと申し上げまして、『一度負けたり落ちぶれたものが、再び舞い戻ってくる』なんてことが御座います、、、

私自身、今度の山火事が無ければ、モノづくりから次第に離れて、忘れかけておりました、

そんな中、
*火事で自身の作品や記録映像などをなくし、
*亡くした物を買い戻すことにも疲れ、
*自身の現状をつづるメディアとしてのブログを通じて、
*モノづくりの真似事のような事を

始めたわけですが、
もともとの過去の栄光自体ありませんので、『捲土重来』とはおいそれとは行きませんが、

『健忘症、ちょうだい』ぐらいにはなったかもしれません、、、

1990年代の学生時代から、追っかけをやっておりました、
アイドルでも芸能人でもなく、

ニキ・スマートさんという
若い工業デザイナーを追っかけておりました、

彼の学生時代の課題作品なども、
カースタイリングやスタイル・デザインなどの
自動車デザイン専門誌によく乗っておりまして、

＊奇抜でありながらどこか親しみやすく、
＊切れきれな部分と、実用的な部分が、
＊見事にバランスしているのが

見ていて気持ちよく、またうらやましくも思えました、、、

そんなスマートさんがハリウッド・ヒルズの
GM先行開発スタジオ勤務時代にデザインしたのが、

GMデザインの
『黄金郷、復活』を告げる、

『キャデラック・エルミラージュ』です。

そんなエル・ミラージュを1/64のホットホイール・ブランドのミニカーとして製造販売したのが、ロサンゼルスの南、エル・セグンドに本拠を構える、老舗おもちゃメーカーのマテル社です。

この会社、
1950年台のバービードールの大ブームで財を成し、
その後、男児向け玩具の超新星、ホットホイールを売り出しこれまた大ブレークを成し遂げ、興生を誇りましたが、「奢れるものも久しからず」という例えにもありますように、

80年台あたりには、
アメリカの自動車メーカーの低迷期と時期を同じくして、急降下、

90年代後半から、
ベビー・ブーマーのおもちゃ収集ブームにのって、大人向けの高精度なミニカーを併売する戦法で復活、ライバル会社マッチボックスを買収するほどの勢いに乗り、今日に至ります。

現在では、
＊従来通りの子供向けのメインラインのシリーズを、一個$1､50で作る
一方、
＊一個5ドルから50ドルの大人向け、コレクター向け商品の、
二刀流で、快進撃を続けています、、、

そんな中見逃せないのが、子供さん向けのメイン・ラインやマッチボックスの低価格版に時々登場する、

『こんなもん１ドルちょっとで売ってええんかい！（宴会＝笑）』的な商品があります。

＊子供さん向けの大袈裟なディフォルメなどは皆無で、
＊正確な造形＋繊細なモールド、
＊銀色やメタリック塗装の薄い塗膜のものを選び、
＊ホイールをリアルなサイズに合わせて
＊車高を微調整すれば、

大人好みの宝物に化ける、ポテンシャルが大ありなんです！

自動車界の巨人GMデザインの復活を呼び込む形となりました、
【エル・ミラージュ】をデザインした

ニキ・スマートさんの奇抜な才能、

そのデザインを完璧に再現した、

＊大人コレクターを取り込む形で成功した、
マテルの（ホットホイールデザインチーム）の意地

捲土重来、の極意は
昔の栄光にしがみつくのではなく、

＊奇抜な若い才能を取り込み、
＊オリジナルの要素を内包しつつも、
＊未来に向かって希望と活力になる、

（個人的に実車を買おうとまでした経験から、あらゆるスケールのミニカーを物色してきましたが、このキャスティングがダントツでピカ1、タイヤとホイールをM2社製のものに交換したら化けました。）

（塗膜が少し暑いので、ぼってりした彫刻になってますが、ボディーの造形やサイズ感、プロポーションは素晴らしい出来栄えです。）

Cadillac division,

a concept car (pre-production model) announced in 2013:

Cadillac
Elmirage.

Its name pays homage to the now-defunct legendary nameplate:

Cadillac
El Dorado,
which graced Cadillac’s top-tier two-door coupes.

A delightful side story is that it was designed
inspired by the 1967 model,
my personal favorite among the many Eldorados.

Right after the 2013 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance (August 18),

I remember seeing this concept car online.
Its design was so quintessentially GM at its peak
that I couldn’t help but smile.

So, here’s how we’ll proceed with the Elmirage,

Under the leadership of Ed Welburn, then GM Vice President of Global Design, and with Niki Smart as lead designer, it was first unveiled at the Concours d’Elegance in Pebble Beach as a model showcasing Cadillac’s future flagship vision.

It masterfully blends classic proportions—inspired by the 1967 Cadillac Eldorado, featuring a long, elegant hood and short deck—with a richly rounded body profile full of complex, contemporary nuances. Tight fender lines, vertically oriented headlights and taillights, and other elements embody Cadillac Design’s philosophy: ‘Art & Science’ design philosophy:

2. The tasteful use of minimal chrome trim edges and decorative graphics

3. The strong individuality of the vertical-themed lighting design & graphics on the front and rear fascias

4. The powerful taper of the side profile and the pleasing projection of the fender surfaces in the plan view (viewed from directly above).

5. A subtle homage to the 1967 Eldorado through the extremely delicate character line in the side view.

#‘Mattel’s Hot Wheels’ are formidable!!

Since its 2013 debut at Pebble Beach,
I’d spent days admiring Eldorado across various media,

but since it wasn’t a production car,
I couldn’t actually touch it in a 3D die-cast model… sob

I pinned my last hope on France’s NOREV,
which often models American cars and concept cars,
but there was no word,
and I was starting to forget about it…

Then,
while searching for a custom wheel and tire set for 1/64 scale mini cars,
I stumbled upon the Mattel Hot Wheels:

‘Cadillac Elmirage’.

#Design Genius: The Legacy of Niki Smart

Niki Smart is a British automotive designer renowned across industries for his eccentric and bold designs.
