#The (Provisional) Culmination of the Japanese-Style Coupe!
In my view, the “evolution of Japanese rear-wheel-drive coupes”
looks something like this,
and it continues unbroken.
For reference, here’s the lineage of the Soarer models…
Amidst all this,
the model I’m introducing today,
the “Lexus LC500
≈ 5th-generation Soarer,” gives me
a strong impression of being
the pinnacle of the Japanese-style FR coupe.
The reason is that,
in today’s automotive market, the segment for luxury two-door coupes like the Soarer and Lexus LC is shrinking dramatically, and the Lexus LC itself already feels like it has “one foot firmly planted in the hypercar market.”
Consequently,
the future of the two-door coupe market—
aside from nostalgic custom cars—
will likely consist of:
* EV-powered hypercars,
* production versions of GT racers, which Lexus is already exploring,
and so on.
The unique proportions of the two-door coupe—which have been made possible by housing the internal combustion engine in a front-mid position—will lose their significance going forward,
and the future of two-door vehicle body design
seems to hinge on
* longer wheelbases and
* research into the ideal weight distribution specific to electric sports cars.
So then,
regarding the “Lexus LC500,”
the ultimate evolution of the FR internal combustion engine sports car,
I’d like to proceed
with the discussion as follows.
* Real-Car Analysis:
* Exterior Design Features:
* “Me” and the Lexus LC500:
* Three-Theme Story: Bitterness, Caviar, Landmarks
* The Pinnacle of Internal Combustion Engines: Landmark Cars…
* Real-Car Analysis: The Ultimate Evolution of the “Japanese-Made FR Coupe”
Overview:
The Lexus LC500 is the top-of-the-line flagship two-door coupe (and convertible) that symbolizes the Lexus brand image. It is a luxury grand tourer (GT) that represents Japan, characterized by its sleek styling—which almost perfectly embodies the design of the 2012 “LF-LC” concept car—and the sensual driving experience produced by a large-displacement, naturally aspirated V8 engine, a type that has now become rare worldwide. Please note that new orders for this model were discontinued as of March 2026.

1. A Chassis (Proportions) That Takes “Wide and Low” to the Extreme
n
* Based on the new-generation FR platform “GA-L”
* Front-mid-ship layout that positions heavy components, such as the engine, toward the center of the vehicle
* An aggressive form achieved through a low center of gravity, low overall height, and wide overall width
* Flared fenders that powerfully emphasize the large 21-inch tires at all four corners
n
n
2. Unique Front Fascia
* Expresses the brand’s identity centered on the spindle grille
* Triangularly arranged ultra-compact triple LED headlamps
* L-shaped position lamps (commonly known as “tear-shaped eyes”) extending vertically toward the turn signals
* Functional ducts that channel airflow from the lower bumper to the wheel wells
n
n
3. Tapered Cabin and Side Profile
* Character lines that flow beautifully from the grille to the pillars and on to the rear
* Cabin shape dynamically tapered inward
* Flush-surface (pop-up) door handles that balance aerodynamics and aesthetic beauty
* Sleek roofline and rear fender intakes positioned behind the doors
n
n
4. Rear Design That Conveys a Sense of Depth
* The taillights incorporate the “infinity mirror” effect, utilizing the principle of mirror reflection
* When illuminated, the L-shaped light creates a fantastical effect that seems to extend infinitely into the distance
* A detail that echoes the front design, with the ends of the taillights tapering into vertical turn signals
* An active rear wing that automatically raises and lowers in response to speed (equipped on the “S package”)
n
* Traditional V8 Engine:
A 5.0L naturally aspirated (NA) V8 engine delivering a maximum output of 477 horsepower is mounted in a front-mid-ship configuration.
* Direct Feel via 10-Speed Automatic Transmission:
Paired with the world’s first 10-speed “Direct Shift-AT” in a passenger car, it delivers rhythmic acceleration and a sensual high-frequency sound inherited from the LFA.
* Next-Generation FR Platform:
The adoption of the low-center-of-gravity, high-rigidity “GA-L” platform achieves a balance between a supple, premium ride quality reminiscent of a large cruiser and excellent handling stability.

“LC”—the brand’s top-of-the-line personal coupe—
took on a rival position against these models.
As for the exterior design features of the “LC,”
in my personal opinion,
they boil down to these five points (+1).
1: An “alien vehicle” feel created by the incredibly bold, otherworldly proportions—low and wide—that bring an extremely original concept car to life almost exactly as envisioned.
Unlike competing models in this price range, which tend to rely on design cues from classic sports cars, the LC’s unique aesthetic beauty is so distinctive that it defies comparison.
2: The intricate, three-dimensional design of the body sides, which bend in a “U-shape,” and the complex, three-dimensional transition from the doors to the rear deck—a design brimming with “edginess” and a sense of the “unconventional”
3: The 21-inch wheels and extremely long wheelbase, evident in the front and rear quarter views, create a tremendous sense of “sturdiness” ———> A sense of deviation from the beauty of classic rear-wheel-drive cars ——→ It’s as if this car exists in a different dimension ≒ full of a sense of incongruity
4: The front and rear end designs—extremely three-dimensional and artisanal—respond to each other perfectly
————> A composition of surfaces and components so complex that even after staring at it for a while, it remains unclear “what exactly is going on”
5: As seen in the plan view (looking down from above), the “tapered” side surfaces—from the intricate front fenders to the rear deck—make full use of the 1m92cm width
6: Perhaps due to the short rear overhang, from certain angles, the car gives off a faint “stunted” impression. ——> Negative evaluation
Now, let’s take a closer look
with photos!
1: An “alien vehicle” feel created by the incredibly bold, otherworldly proportions—[low and wide]—that are virtually a direct realization of an extremely original concept car.
(The market strategy—aiming to completely differentiate itself from classic European luxury coupes and accepting that if just 1–2 out of 10 people fall in love with it, that’s enough—has paid off. The sense of “doing whatever we want” is wonderful.)
Unlike competing models in this price range, which tend to rely on design cues from classic sports cars, this car boasts a unique aesthetic so distinctive that it defies comparison.
2: The extremely three-dimensional body sides that bend in a “U-shape,” and the intricate three-dimensional design from the doors to the rear deck—which is anything but straightforward and brims with “edginess and a sense of unease” [≈ a rare delicacy]
(The outrageous stance achieved by carving out the generous overall width to an almost impossible degree is almost grotesque… [The width of a hypercar in a standard FR coupe])
Is this essential for Toyota and Lexus to bridge the gap into the hypercar market?
3: The 21-inch wheels and extremely long wheelbase, evident in the front and rear quarter views, create a tremendous sense of “stability”
A sense of deviation from the beauty of the classic FR layout—→ It’s as if this car exists in a different dimension ≒ Full of dissonance
4: The front and rear end designs—extremely three-dimensional and artisanal—respond to each other perfectly
The composition of surfaces and components is so complex that even after staring at it for a while, it’s unclear “what exactly is going on”
5: A “tapered” side profile—from the intricate front fenders to the rear deck—that fully utilizes the 1m92cm width, revealed in a plan view (looking down from above)
6: Perhaps due to the short rear overhang, from certain angles, the car gives off a faint “stunted” impression. ——> Negative evaluation
*“Me” and the Lexus LC500h
#“Caviar with Japanese Cuisine?”: Lexus’s Challenge!
To put it in the language of a dining review,
“The richest Japanese cuisine”
This is the impression I’ve held so far
regarding the Lexus LC500h.
My first encounter was
with the official catalog I received from Lexus after seeing it in Japan.
I remember the catalog—with its stunning design and substantial feel—
conveying a sense of fantasy more intensely than anything I’d ever experienced before.
After that, I spotted it numerous times in LA,
but my impression of it kept changing drastically each time, and I just couldn’t settle on a single impression.
* The deep, imposing front grille—so unlike any other Japanese car,
* The elusive, uncertain curve of the body’s side profile…
* Just the rear fenders alone—a hypercar!
* The depth of the rear contours = a certain “cheesiness”
It was like that—I can’t say it was entirely positive;
my head was filled only with fragments of this chaotic impression.
This situation
was finally resolved when I acquired a 1/64 die-cast mini car
that I’d discovered in an AliExpress ad.
To truly understand the LC500’s exterior design—which deviates from the established design conventions of high-end two-door coupes from start to finish—and to properly appreciate its brilliance, it wasn’t enough to simply understand the grammar of traditional automotive design; I was compelled to draw on art history and the principles of appreciating contemporary art.
To reach that point,
the relatively small and precise die-cast model car I used this time was absolutely essential.
The reason for this is that,
* In this design, where elements that would typically serve as the primary visual icons of a standard car
* are crammed in one after another at intervals of about 50 cm,
* layers upon layers of an overwhelmingly rich flavor are piled high,
* and taking just one bite would numb the tongue, making it completely impossible to evaluate
It was like that—
only by photographing the relatively small 1/64-scale model car from a distance (removing the fisheye lens effect) was I finally able to calmly observe and evaluate the three-dimensional form and graphics, which closely resemble the traditional 8-head-height proportions.
To put it another way,
in order to fully appreciate this Lexus, its overall length would need to be extended by about 15 cm to around 5 meters; unless it conforms to the conventional aesthetic—at least in terms of its sense of expansiveness—it feels like being forced to drink a contemporary art piece “undiluted,” and it is simply not something one can readily appreciate as beautiful at first glance.
#3D Experience:
I’d like to introduce the 3D model that was essential
for understanding this LC500, which feels like a mass of [bitter sharpness].
* Manufactured by Encheri, 1/64 scale die-cast ready-to-display model [unlicensed], Lexus LC500h (Metallic Red)
(Although it’s unlicensed, the front and rear lights are separate parts; the intricate sculpted lines crisscrossing the entire body are accurately reproduced, and on top of that, the tires and wheels are flawlessly crafted
Lowering the ride height to the absolute limit really brought out its fierce presence.)
——Modifications: Adjusted the tires, wheels, and axles; painted the wheels black; applied ink wash to the left half of the body; and added weathering effects.)
*1/64 Die-Cast Ready-to-Display Model [Unlicensed], Lexus LC500h (Metallic Red)
(This is also unlicensed, but after thorough research, I found it’s manufactured from a completely different mold. I’m amazed that such finely detailed, high-quality die-cast models are being released by multiple companies at the same scale! The clear coat finish is beautiful, the paint surface is uniform, and the light reflects brilliantly. ———> I’d like to compare it to the Nihon Prototype version, but that one comes with a super-premium price tag.)
Well then, the moment you’ve all been waiting for?
It’s time for the “Three-Theme Story.”
*Three-Theme Story: Bitterness, Caviar, Landmark
This one’s a doozy again!
I’ve been given some pretty out-there themes here—
Topics:
* Bitterness
* Caviar
* Landmark
I wonder how this will turn out…

“Hey, Pierre, did you see that? It’s my new ride, the Lexus LC500!”
n
“Wow, that’s amazing. That huge front grille, and the way the body tapers from the sides to the rear… it has such incredible depth.”
n
“Right? It’s a combination of undulating surfaces you’d never see on a regular car. These complex, striking character lines—that’s exactly what you’d call the ‘edge’ of the design! That bold presence and sharp character are what give it that mature, seductive allure.”
n
“I see—so it’s got a really distinctive look. What about the performance?”
n
“It’s a 5-liter naturally aspirated V8 engine! Just a light tap on the accelerator sends a sensual V8 roar that pierces right through your skull. The 10-speed automatic shifts in an instant, accelerating as smoothly as if it were gliding along the ground.”
n
“Wow, so the driving performance is top-notch too. So, where are you heading in that masterpiece today?”
“I’m heading to the city’s number one ‘landmark’—a top-tier French restaurant at the foot of the Eiffel Tower. There, I’ll treat my date tonight to the finest feast.”
n
n
Jean drove through the streets with panache, the Parisian cityscape beautifully reflected in the LC500’s intricate bodywork.
When he arrived at the restaurant, a beautiful blonde woman was waiting for him. Jean struck a cool pose as he opened the menu.
n
“Mademoiselle, for our appetizer, let’s start with a heaping serving of the finest ‘caviar.’”
n
What was served was magnificent, glossy black caviar. After taking a bite, the beautiful woman’s expression shifted from one of rapture to a slight frown.
“Hey, Jean. This caviar has a kind of unique ‘bitter aftertaste,’ doesn’t it…?”
n
“Hahaha! You’ve got a keen eye! With true, top-of-the-line products, it’s that subtle ‘edge’ that gives them their depth. Take a look at the design of my Lexus LC500—the one I just drove here in. Those intricately undulating three-dimensional lines—aren’t they a concentrated mass of that intense ‘edge’? In other words, whether it’s this caviar or my car, true first-class quality is only complete when it has that intense edge!”
n
n
With a smug grin, Jean scooped up the remaining caviar from the plate with his spoon and stuffed it into his mouth in one big bite.
Suddenly, his face turned pale, and he began coughing violently, making strange crunching and grating sounds.
n
n
“Cough, cough! … “Whoa, what is this?! Far from being a ‘grown-up’ flavor, my mouth feels gritty, and this weird, plastic-like ‘bitterness’ is spreading through it! Chef! Call the chef!”
n
The restaurant’s chef rushed over in a panic, turned pale as he looked at Jean’s plate, and apologized profusely.
n
“Ahh, Monsieur! I’m so terribly sorry! That is not the highest-grade caviar!”
n
“W-What?! “Then what are these black, round grains I’ve been eating with such appreciation all this time!?”
n
“W-well… earlier, Monsieur, you proudly backed your car into that prime spot right in front of the restaurant with a view of the landmark (the Eiffel Tower), didn’t you?”
n
“Ah, yeah. I wanted to show off the beautiful rear design of my LC500 to everyone. What’s that got to do with it?”
n
“Well, when you did that, you ended up crashing into the hedge behind you with quite a bit of force…
The impact shattered the Lexus LC500’s ‘black plastic fragments from the ultra-complex rear taillights’ into pieces, and our new chef mistook them for a ‘new kind of caviar’ and arranged them neatly on your plate…”
n
n“W-What!? So, what I’ve been eating with such relish this whole time was a fragment of that intricately designed taillight from my beloved car!?”
n
“Yes… It was such an intricately beautiful three-dimensional design that I was convinced it was some kind of high-end caviar, like flying fish roe or something…”
n
n
n
Jean’s pride was in shambles, just like his shattered taillight. The beautiful woman in front of him was utterly repulsed, and the other diners began to chuckle.
If he’d apologized gracefully at that moment, the damage would have been minimal, but Jean—ever the show-off—panicked, his face turning bright red as he started yelling.
n
n
“D-Don’t be ridiculous! There’s no way a top-tier celebrity like me wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between a car part and caviar! Listen, this is a fragment from the Lexus flagship, the LC500! It’s not just plastic—it’s packed with Japan’s cutting-edge technology; you could call it ‘carbon-style bitterness’! As for the taste, look—the more you chew it, the more it’s like the smooth shifting of a 10-speed automatic transmission… Guh, ouch!”
n
He tried to force it down, but it got stuck in his throat, and with tears in his eyes, he gulped down some oolong tea. The beautiful woman stood up in exasperation, said, “I’m leaving,” and walked out of the restaurant.
n
“Ah, wait a minute, Mademoiselle! …Damn it, now that it’s come to this, I’m going to vent this anger by tearing through the base of that magnificent Eiffel Tower with the roar of the LC500’s V8! ”
n
n
Jean tossed the bill aside and stormed out of the restaurant, furious. He jumped into his LC500—its taillights already tragically shattered—and slammed his foot down on the accelerator.
n
n
“I’ll show you the power of this roaring V8!”
n
n
However, in his panic, he’d left the gear in Reverse (R) instead of Drive (D).
CRASH!!!
Driven by the LC500’s ferocious V8 power and the 10-speed automatic transmission’s astonishing responsiveness, the car accelerated violently straight backward. It then plowed even more “complicatedly” into the restaurant’s glass-enclosed terrace seating area.
The restaurant fell deathly silent. From the driver’s seat of the wrecked LC500, Jean—with a leaf from the hedge perched on his head and clutching a plate with bloodshot eyes—shouted in a trembling voice.
n
“H-hey, Chef! …I’d like a second helping! This time, the entire ‘spindle grille’ on the front end is completely shattered, so I can get a jumbo serving of caviar for free!!”
n
N
n
“Well now, while the design of this legendary car is top-notch, it seems the owner’s head had quite a ‘bitter’ shape.”

*The Pinnacle of Internal Combustion Engines: Other Landmark Cars…
By the way,
are there any other
monumental cars powered by internal combustion engines,
like the Lexus LC500?
*Ford Model T, 1908
(The American car that is, needless to say, the “great-grandfather” of all mass-produced vehicles,
There are an incredible number of variations.)
* Bonne Digette, 1962 (The world’s first mid-engine sports car)
(Featuring a low-cost engine sourced from Renault and an ultra-lightweight fiberglass body, it became the model for subsequent mid-engine production cars. ———> With its beautifully cohesive and elegant body design, it was “the car I’d dreamed of since childhood.”)
* Volkswagen Golf GTI, 1976
(Its perfect packaging—like the gold standard for all subsequent hot hatchbacks—is simply incredible. The angular body designed by Giugiaro
——> has a “rich, distinctive shape” no matter how you look at it!)
* Citroën DS, 1955 (Spring Green)
(It’s a miracle that a car like this was released in 1955. It’s a miracle in the industrial product market—a bundle of originality and individuality that can’t be summed up by just its streamlined style.
---→ I used to own a [VITTESE model].)
*[Color Code: RD9 / BLVC940])
(The forefather of all front-wheel-drive, three-box cars: Inside that famously adorable body style lies a spacious interior capable of seating four people!
---→ Every time I see the real thing, I’m blown away by how much smaller and cuter it is than I expected—it makes me want one. (lol))
There’s a long list of great cars out there,
but personally, I believe the
“Lexus LC500” I’m featuring here
is worthy of joining this ranks,
achieving this level of excellence
solely through
the “pinnacle of exterior design”
of a large, rear-wheel-drive vehicle
with an internal combustion engine.
To evaluate it fairly,
one must observe it from a distance of nearly 50 meters—
that “intense presence capable of distorting perspective” = the pinnacle of the Lexus design team:
As for the “LC500,”
I think that’s about all I’ll say for now…
Starting next time,
I’d like to feature
three American muscle cars.
The first installment will be the Dodge Challenger and
Plymouth Barracuda—the “Mooper” duo.
Stay tuned――
Regarding this blog and its content:
My goal in writing these blog posts is to clarify my personal, distinctive criteria for evaluation—including my somewhat unconventional perspectives—through my involvement with three-dimensional art (including cooking), and to document how I have satisfied and fulfilled my curiosity and desire to explore “beauty and deliciousness.”
Therefore, while I pay the utmost attention to the numbers, model years, and detailed data that appear in my articles, it’s possible that I may occasionally make significant errors or misunderstandings. In particular, key specifications and model years in automotive articles can often be confusing, so I would appreciate it if you treated them as general references only.
For my part, I feel that I’m inserting dates and data into the articles as objective material to create a “flow” that connects my personal assessments of exterior design and taste to the broader themes explored in the latter half of the piece. What I ultimately prioritize are the new “perspectives” and “unexpected connections between pieces of information” that emerge from the chaotic jumble of memories in my own mind. The various data points are needed secondarily as part of that “flow” to generate that momentum.
As a slight digression, in the world of rakugo—which I love—there’s a playful format called “san-dai-banashi,” where a performer weaves a single story using three topics solicited on the spot from the audience. I feel like I’m doing something similar, using the characteristics of three-dimensional sculptures and (the flavors of dishes) as my prompts. The countless ideas that flit through my mind during this process are completely unexpected and delightful; they often drastically change the content of future articles or lead to new developments.
How This Blog Works:
“Spots and Lines of Curiosity x Whimsical Mental Circuits = Unexpected New Developments”
This blog may be a bit self-indulgent, but I hope you’ll continue to follow along.
Note: To create the “flow” described above, I take as many photos as possible using my own die-cast cars and home-cooked meals. However, I do borrow the absolute minimum necessary illustrations and photos from other bloggers’ posts and company websites. (I edit them to fit the article’s content and post them at the lowest possible resolution.) If there are any issues, please contact me and I will remove them immediately.
Addendum 2: You are free to use the photos of die-cast cars and other images (taken by me) featured in this blog’s posts in any way you like without permission. I create these posts with the understanding that my personal creativity belongs to me alone.
