Food Review: “Lamb Wrap & Chicken Biriyani” from “Himalayan Cafe: Nepalese, Tibetan, Northern Indian Cuisine” in Old Pasadena
My wife’s favorite,
located in Old Town Pasadena,
a Nepalese restaurant,
I paid a visit to [Himalayan Cafe].
It’s located a short way south of the intersection of Fair Oaks and Colorado;
it’s a cozy restaurant with a friendly atmosphere that’s a real pleasure to visit.
As the sign indicates, it specializes in cuisine from Nepal, Bhutan, and Northern India,
and it’s extremely popular as a place where you can enjoy Himalayan regional dishes at reasonable prices.
It seems similar to Indian cuisine,
but my impression is that it’s not quite as spicy—
but is that really the case?
This time, I ordered the following:
* Samosa Chat (an appetizer featuring crushed samosas topped with puri)
* Lamb Wrap
* Chicken Biryani
* Eggplant and Vegetable Curry
So,
I’d like to focus my review
on the Lamb Wrap and the Samosa Chat.
* Appearance:
* Taste:
* Overall Impressions:
* Appearance: It looks a little spicy, but… it’s fine!
#Appearance: Chicken Biryani
It’s similar to what we in Japan call
“dry curry” or “curry fried rice,”
but the actual appearance is:
* Quite reddish,
* Perhaps thanks to being steamed in multiple layers?
* Speckled—likely due to the way the meat and vegetable paste are mixed—
* There are areas with a deep red hue and others that are lighter.
* The contrast with the accompanying yogurt sauce with cucumber was beautiful.
n
What is Biryani?:
Originating as far back as Persian pilau, it’s the Indian version of pilaf—a cousin to French pilaf, Spanish paella, and Southern U.S. jambalaya—that spread from Indian royal cuisine to the general public.
How to Make It:
* Partially cooked rice is layered alternately with meat and vegetables seasoned with spices,
* in multiple layers,
* then covered tightly,
* and slowly steamed.
Features:
* Along with the rich aroma of spices,
* the rice grains retain just the right amount of bite,
* featuring white sections, mixed sections, and sections thoroughly infused with flavor,
* allowing you to enjoy a variety of tastes and textures in a single dish.
#Appearance: Lamb Wrap
When I first saw this dish, I couldn’t help but wonder,
“Is this a specialty from my hometown, Nagoya?”
The way it was wrapped looked exactly like
a cabbage-style okonomiyaki.
(It’s tightly wrapped in paper and aluminum foil.)
Since it’s cut in half down the middle,
I can only see the cross-section, but from that I can tell that
* Large chunks of lamb,
* along with onions, cauliflower, bell peppers, and corn,
* were coated in a red sauce,
* and wrapped in thick, fluffy bread.
* It comes with some delicious-looking mango chutney.
Well, let’s dig right in!
* Taste: The key is the balance and the “flavor shift”!
#Taste: Chicken Biryani
The contrast between the milder-than-expected spices
and the rich lamb is wonderful,
and the flavor makes you want to keep eating more and more.
Plus,
* The flavor and texture vary completely depending on where you bite into it,
* Drizzling the cucumber-yogurt sauce on top makes it mild and refreshing…
This double “flavor-shift attack” is a lot of fun,
and the balance with the other dishes is exquisite—
it’s definitely a dish I’ll be ordering again.
#Flavor: Lamb Wrap
Although this is presented as finger food, it has a very robust flavor and substantial portion size, making it a truly satisfying dish.
It resembles an impromptu wrap—similar to Mexican fajitas or “El Pollo Loco”—
where you wrap the meat
in the accompanying tortilla.
Inside,
there are 5–6 pieces of lamb cut into extra-large chunks,
so no matter how many bites it takes to finish, you’ll be savoring chunks of lamb with every mouthful.
I think lamb lovers will find this irresistible.
It’s seasoned with rare high-altitude spices,
isn’t too spicy, and feels like a hearty, satisfying meal!
Plus, as a “flavor-changing twist,”
adding the included mango chutney
brings a sweet-and-sour note,
adding complexity to the flavor—it made me feel like I’d glimpsed the depth of Himalayan cuisine. So happy!
*Random Thoughts: The joys and sorrows of encountering a different culture…
I happened to stumble upon this Nepalese restaurant by chance,
and when I offered my condolences to the waitress—who was about 25 or 26 years old—
regarding the recent glacier collapse, she told me that while her family was safe,
her childhood friend was still missing.
“A blend of casual comfort and authentic cuisine”—
this is exactly the kind of restaurant my wife and I love most,
【Himalayan Cafe】
It looks like we’ll be returning here time and time again.

Regarding this blog and its content:
n
My goal in writing these blog posts is to clarify my personal, distinctive criteria for evaluation—including my somewhat quirky perspectives—through my engagement with three-dimensional art (including cooking), and to document how I have satisfied and fulfilled my curiosity and desire to explore “beauty and deliciousness.”
Consequently, while I pay the utmost attention to the numbers, years, and detailed data that appear in my articles, it is possible that I may occasionally make significant errors or misunderstandings. In particular, key specifications and model years in automotive articles can often be confusing, so I would appreciate it if you treated this information as a general reference only.
For my part, I feel as though I’m inserting dates and data into the articles as objective material to create a “flow” that connects my personal assessments of exterior design and taste to the broader themes explored in the latter half of the piece. What I ultimately prioritize are the new “perspectives” and “unexpected connections between pieces of information” that emerge from the chaotic jumble of memories in my own mind. The various data points are needed secondarily as part of that “flow” to generate that momentum.
As a slight digression, in the world of rakugo—which I love—there’s a playful format called “san-dai-banashi,” where a performer weaves a single story using three topics solicited on the spot from the audience. I feel like I’m doing something similar here, using the characteristics of three-dimensional sculptures and (the flavors of dishes) as my prompts. The countless ideas that flit through my mind during this process are completely unexpected and delightful; they often drastically alter the content of future articles or lead to new developments.
How This Blog Works:
“Spots and Lines of Curiosity x Whimsical Mental Circuits = Unexpected New Developments”
This blog may be a bit self-indulgent, but I hope you’ll continue to follow along.
Note: To create the “flow” described above, I take photos using my own die-cast cars and home-cooked meals whenever possible. However, I do borrow the absolute minimum necessary illustrations and photos from other bloggers’ posts and company websites. (I edit them to fit the article’s content and post them at the lowest possible resolution.) If there are any issues, please contact me, and I will remove them immediately.
Addendum 2: You are free to use the photos of die-cast cars and other images (taken by me) featured in this blog’s posts in any way you like without permission. I create these posts with the understanding that my personal creativity belongs to me alone.
