Episode 15: ‘The Secrets of Food Reviews & The EV Charging Drama, Revisited!!’ Design Struggles Edition
(Ham sandwich with cucumber, tomato, and lettuce on sourdough bread…)

Episode 15 is titled ‘3 Categories for My Miscellaneous Blog & The Struggle to Raise Reconstruction Funds Part 3’. I’d like to focus on the ‘tears and laughter’ from June and July 2025.
I’ll proceed as follows.
This time covers the last three items.
* New Home Design: The Mystery of the ‘Katsura Imperial Villa Veranda Concept’?
* Creating Blog Categories?
* ‘Home Rebuilding’: A Record of the Hardships and Joys Surrounding the Home Fire and Rebuilding
* ‘Sculptural Design’: Introducing Automotive Design and Favorite Sculptures
* ‘Food Reports’: Restaurant Reviews & Homemade Recipes…
* The Electric Vehicle Charging Drama at Home, Recurring!!
*Funding the Home Rebuild… Might Be Impossible?
*‘Food Reports’: Restaurant Reviews & Homemade/Custom Recipes etc…
(I mixed Korean instant naengmyeon with ‘Stir-fried Green Beans and Ground Pork’.)
I already had two categories decided,
but for the third, something light? …
While pondering this,
and also feeling hungry,
That’s it!
I’ll introduce favorite foods, dishes, recipes,
and such.
And so,
the third category was decided.
My wife and I have been a food-loving couple since our honeymoon days.
My American wife cooks American home cooking, I make Japanese and Asian recipes, and on weekends, driven by curiosity, we go out to eat at various restaurants.
Even now, after the fire and while evacuated,
my wife and I are trying out all sorts of new recipes together.
So, here’s the plan:
* Restaurant Reviews:
* Instant Food Reviews:
* Simple Recipes for Home Cooking:
* Restaurant Reports:
We’re currently staying in an apartment near Old Town in downtown Pasadena. With no parking hassles and everything within walking distance, we’ve been trying new restaurants every weekend. So, I’ll be sharing photos and stories about these restaurants and their dishes.
*Instant Meal Reports: Hooray for Trader Joe’s!
After evacuating due to the fire, I stayed with a friend for three weeks. During that time, I started eating Trader Joe’s frozen Indian meal series and became hooked. Since then, I’ve been trying their snacks and frozen foods from other countries. I want to share my experiences with product details and customization methods.
*Simple Recipes for Home Cooking:
After moving into this apartment, I stayed away from cooking for a while due to unfamiliarity with the kitchen layout and lack of dishes/cookware. But now, I’ve started making the classic recipes from our household that I remember, which we’ve kept up since getting married. I’d like to share these recipes simply.
(My wife’s signature chicken faneel soup with plenty of lemon juice)
*The charging drama with our personal electric vehicle resurfaces⁉
Hmm
Hmm
Hmm
Hmm
*The ‘Nightmare’ of Being Unable to Charge
Hmm
Hmm
Hmm
The charging problem with our personal electric vehicle, which has troubled us repeatedly since the disaster, has resurfaced again in June.
Specifically,
our beloved car since late 2024,
n
n
2021 Chevrolet Bolt (Before the disaster, we comfortably charged it to full capacity over 2-3 days using cheap nighttime electricity from a regular home outlet.)
n
My wife uses it for her daily commute.
She could fully charge it in 6-7 hours using a 200-volt level charger at a charging station in a public parking lot across from her workplace during her work hours.
However, in March and April, it failed to charge twice.
n
*We replaced the charging socket receptacle (March)
*We removed the battery and replaced the battery auxiliary unit (April)
n
Each time, we felt relieved, thinking, “Finally fixed!!”
n
n
n
n
n
Now, it’s happened again: ‘Charging Failed!!’
My wife and I have once more
sunk into the depths of anxiety.
n
n
n
n
n
n
*Finally, pinpointing the cause?
n
n
Following the routine we’d already grown accustomed to,
*We took it to the Chevy dealer in Monrovia,
*Picked up a GM rental car from the nearby Hertz dealer,
*Dropped it off on Saturday, got a status update on Tuesday, picked it up on Wednesday or Thursday,
*The rental car and repair costs were covered by the dealer.
n
n
The repair process proceeded like this,
and this time,
without any repairs to the Bolt itself,
this was the result:
n
n
* The problem wasn’t with the car’s battery or mechanics,
* but rather a compatibility issue between the charging program for this model year Bolt
* and the charging station near my wife’s workplace that she frequently used.
* Using other stations allowed charging without any problems.
n
n
According to the dealer’s explanation,
they checked past repair records and found that all seven Bolts recently brought in for charging-related issues had used the same charging station as my wife’s.
n
n
n
n
n
n
*Discovered a new charging pattern!
n
n
Told we couldn’t use the charging facility in the park—a location extremely convenient for my wife—we embarked on a journey to find a charging station in a spot that’s always handy, something surprisingly hard to come by…
After searching as far as neighboring South Pasadena and even Walkディア, we finally settled on a convenient four-station charging facility on the third floor of a public parking garage just a five-minute walk from our apartment.
*Negative factors include:
*Paying parking fees ($12) while charging, and
*It’s always crowded with long wait times since there are only four chargers.
However, we solved this by waking up early and rushing there around 5 AM on Saturday mornings. (Parking fees are offset since electricity rates are cheaper during this time. Yay!)

*Update:
n
n
As a car enthusiast,
I switched from a 2017 Toyota MIRAI to a Chevrolet Bolt.
Being my first American-brand car and my first electric vehicle,
I was pretty nervous when I bought this three-year-old used model in late 2023.
n
n
*Once I got used to charging from a regular outlet in my home garage,
*the snappy initial acceleration,
*the feeling of deceleration without braking during one-pedal driving,
*and many other elements quickly became familiar and immediately pleasurable.
*Plus, charging overnight at home costs less than half the fuel expense of a gasoline car.
n
n
n
The saying, “Once you get used to an EV, there’s no going back,”
was absolutely true!!
No matter what developments lie ahead,
I am convinced that electric motor-powered vehicles will undoubtedly become the mainstream in the future!!
(Of course, the power source doesn’t necessarily have to be the currently mainstream storage batteries… wireless power transmission seems promising?)
n
n
n
n
n
n
n
n
n
n
*Funding for rebuilding my home… maybe impossible?
n
n
n
*New source of anxiety:
n
n
While the home rebuilding project is steadily progressing through interactions with SV Office,
N
at this point,
anxiety about the crucial funding aspect has begun to surface.
n
n
In other words,
n
*While we’ve been hesitating over submitting documents for the ultra-low-interest loan from the Federal Housing Finance Agency,
*The Trump administration’s introduction of tariffs against China seems imminent,
*And on top of that, construction labor costs (wages) are rising,
n
n
our budget has become insufficient. We no longer have the leeway to discuss plans like the rental unit above the garage. We negotiated with Architect SV and had to reduce the total estimated construction cost by about 12%, as stated in the contract.
n
m
n
Our already significant anxiety about realizing the reconstruction has swelled even further.
n
n
n
n
n
n
n
n
At this point, there was nothing my wife and I could do.
All we could do was hope that the approval for the low-interest loan from the federal government we were counting on
would come through as soon as possible.
n
n
n
n
n
Next time,
I’d like to share what happened to the gift for my wife on our wedding anniversary.
Stay tuned—
