Food Review: “Spinach and Cheese Pupusa” from “La Caravana: A Long-Established El Salvadorian Restaurant”

In my dreams,
I found myself reminiscing about that nostalgic flavor,

so this weekend, I headed to [La Caravana], an El Salvadorian restaurant located on North Lake Avenue in Pasadena, specifically to try their “pupusa.”

This Salvadoran restaurant had previously set up a stall at the Alta Dinna Morning Market twice,
and I tried the “pupusa,” recommended by my wife, who’s knowledgeable about Central and South American cuisine.

Even though it was my first time trying it, the flavor felt so familiar—

* Okonomiyaki,
* Pizza loaded with cheese,
* “Oyaki” from Nagano Prefecture,
* pancakes,
* naan with cheese,
* South American empanadas,
* pan-fried gyoza,

and so on—
it felt like they’d combined all these flour-based dishes to “take the best of each,”

with a moist, juicy texture
and a delicate yet satisfying flavor created by simple ingredients—
I fell in love with it at first bite.

This time, I ordered:
* Spinach and cheese pupusa
* Beef and cheese pupusa
* Ochata drink

My wife ordered:
* Lolo Ko flower and cheese pupusa
* Spinach and cheese pupusa
* Tamarind Drink
(Loloco flower: the bud of a vine native to Central America)

.

So,
here’s my report.

* Introduction to Restaurant “La Calabana”:
* Appearance of the dishes:
* Taste of the dishes:
* Impressions:

* Introduction to “La Calabana”:

This time, I visited “La Calabana,” located on Lake Avenue in Pasadena,
north of the 210 Freeway and just before Washington Avenue,

“La Calabana.”

Since opening in 1994, this long-standing, community-oriented restaurant has been
serving authentic Salvadoran cuisine for over 30 years.

On the night of my visit,
the place was bustling with Latin American patrons—including families and couples—
(perhaps because the World Cup was underway).

Upon opening the heavy, cantina-style French doors and stepping inside,

* a deep, high-ceilinged, bright, and cozy interior,
* seating centered around booths, and
* the smiling staff

welcomed me.

Now, let’s move on
to the food.

* Appearance of the dishes: Elegance hidden beneath an unpretentious exterior?

#Appearance:

Drink: Ochata

Visually, it’s a simple drink—slightly cloudy and grayish, resembling Calpis—
that makes you anticipate that familiar,

“milky amazake-like flavor.”

* Spinach and Cheese Pupusa

From Nagano Prefecture,
* It looks like a further flattened version of “Oyaki,”
* and the oozing cheese—including the charred bits—
conveys a sense that this is no ordinary dish.

When it comes time to eat it, you open up the pupusa
and add the accompanying:

* Curtido (spiced Suzuya-style cabbage and carrots)
* Hot sauce (a tomato-based, tangy and spicy sauce— [not very spicy])

It was wonderful how the dish instantly became photogenic
once you added these toppings.

Pupusa is a traditional national dish of El Salvador in Central America. It’s a dish similar to Japan’s oyaki or thick pancakes, made by wrapping fillings in cornmeal (masa) dough, flattening it, and grilling it on a griddle.

* Beef and Cheese Pupusa

This one looked almost identical as well,

and it was so perfectly
surrounded by melted cheese that I couldn’t help but wonder,
“Was that on purpose?”—it really whetted my appetite.

* Taste: The perfect “flour-based dish” experience!

* Spinach and Cheese Pupusa

The perfect “flour-based dish” experience!

I don’t think there are many foods that this phrase describes so perfectly,
but for me, this pupusa is truly the number one flour-based dish.

First,
I’ll try it without any toppings.

* Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, with slightly bitter cornmeal,
* Filled with juicy cheese and rich, sautéed spinach,

The aftertaste is
a flavor explosion—
the gentle flavor of corn
and the rich umami of the caramelized cheese!

Next, with toppings…

Eating them with sour and spicy cabbage
creates a sensation as exquisite as eating gyoza with chili oil-infused soy-vinegar sauce!

* With cabbage,
* With tomato sauce,
* With everything together,

Each combination was wonderful,
and I found myself completely captivated, feeling as if I were embraced by the deep, vast universe of “PUPUSA.”

Next to me, oblivious to my excitement,
my wife was glued to the World Cup match against Argentina,
and I started to notice her disapproving glances.

*The beef and cheese pupusa was equally satisfying.
Next time, I definitely want to try the pupusa with lolo co flowers and cheese that my wife ordered,
as well as the simple
pupusa filled with cheese and refried bean paste.

*Ochata Drink

I was a little disappointed with this one.
Unlike the Mexican-style version—which is slightly sweet with a gentle, lingering cinnamon flavor—

this one had a slightly gritty texture,
was barely sweet at all, and had an aftertaste reminiscent of crushed almonds.
It felt more like a heavy “health drink” than a soft drink… *sob*

Next time, I’d like to try the tamarind drink my wife ordered,
or the

“Shake (Strawberry Flavor)” listed at the very bottom of the menu.

*Thoughts: I’ll definitely be back!

I’m surprised there’s such a wonderful
restaurant right near my house!

I definitely want to come back
and try various pupusas and other specialty dishes.

How about giving this new kind of
“flour-based dish” a try?

About this blog and its content:

My goal in writing these blog posts is to clarify my personal, distinctive criteria for evaluation—including my somewhat unconventional perspective—through my engagement with three-dimensional art (including cuisine), and to document how I have satisfied and fulfilled my curiosity and desire to explore “beauty and deliciousness.”

Consequently, while I pay the utmost attention to the numbers, years, and detailed data that appear in my articles, it is possible that I may occasionally make significant errors or misunderstandings. In particular, key specifications and model years in automotive articles can often be confusing, so I would appreciate it if you would consider them for reference only.

For my part, I feel as though I’m inserting dates and data into the articles as objective material to create a “flow” that connects my personal assessments of exterior design and taste to the broader themes explored in the latter half of the piece. What I ultimately prioritize are the new “perspectives” and “unexpected connections between pieces of information” that emerge from the chaotic jumble of memories in my own mind. The various data points are needed secondarily as part of that “flow” to generate that momentum.

As a slight digression, in the world of rakugo—which I love—there’s a playful format called “san-dai-banashi,” where a performer weaves a single story using three topics solicited on the spot from the audience. I feel like I’m doing something similar here, using the characteristics of three-dimensional sculptures and (the taste of food) as my prompts. The countless ideas that flit through my mind during this process are completely unexpected and delightful; they often drastically change the content of future articles or lead to new developments.

How This Blog Works:
“Spots and Lines of Curiosity x Whimsical Mental Circuits = Unexpected New Developments”

This blog may be a bit self-indulgent, but I hope you’ll continue to follow along.

Note: To create the “flow” described above, I take as many photos as possible using my own die-cast cars and home-cooked meals. However, I do borrow the absolute minimum necessary illustrations and photos from other bloggers’ posts and company websites. (I edit them to fit the article’s content and post them at the lowest possible resolution.) If there are any issues, please contact me and I will remove them immediately.

Addendum 2: You are free to use the photos of die-cast cars and other images (taken by me) featured in this blog’s posts in any way you like without permission. I create these posts with the understanding that my personal creativity belongs to me alone.
