The new 3 Series EV model, which adopts BMW’s next-generation EV-exclusive platform “Neue Klasse,” made its world debut in March 2026 as the “BMW i3 (Sedan)” and has begun sales in the European market.
It is the second model in the Neue Klasse lineup, following the new “iX3” SUV, and full-scale series production began in earnest at the Munich plant in Germany in August 2026.

n
Key Specifications and Features of the New “i3” Sedan:
n
Unlike previous gasoline-based EVs (such as the i4), it was developed based on the all-new, EV-exclusive “800V Gen6 platform.”
n
*Remarkable Range: Equipped with newly developed cylindrical battery cells (6th-generation BMW eDrive technology), it achieves a remarkable range of up to approximately 900 km in WLTP mode.
*Unmatched Ultra-Fast Charging: Supports DC fast charging at up to 400 kW. A mere 10-minute charge restores approximately 400 km of range, and charging from 10% to 80% takes about 21 minutes.
*Outstanding Driving Performance: The previously released launch model, the “i3 50 xDrive (all-wheel drive),” delivers a maximum output of 469 ps and peak torque of 645 Nm thanks to its front and rear dual motors.
n
n
n
Body Dimensions (Comparison with the Current 3 Series):
Compared to the current G20 gasoline-powered 3 Series, the vehicle has been enlarged in all dimensions to provide more interior space.
n
*Overall Length: 4,760 mm (+40 mm)
*Overall Width: 1,865 mm (+45 mm)
*Overall Height: 1,480 mm (+40 mm)
* Wheelbase: 2,897 mm (+47 mm)
Futuristic Interior:
The cockpit features the debut of “BMW Panoramic iDrive.” Since speed and navigation information are projected onto a display that spans the full width of the lower portion of the windshield, the traditional separate instrument panel has been eliminated, creating an extremely minimalist and sophisticated space.

Future Timeline and Variants
Addition of the Touring (Station Wagon)
Following the sedan, a camouflaged prototype of the “i3 Touring”—an electric station wagon—has already been spotted, and it is expected to go on sale around 2027.
The Most Powerful “M Model (iM3 / ZA0)”
In 2027, BMW M is also set to introduce a fully electric high-performance model (commonly known as the iM3) equipped with a quad-motor (4-motor) powertrain.
Timeline for Japan Launch
The “iX3,” the first SUV in the Neue Klasse lineup, went on sale in Japan in July 2026. The new “i3” sedan is also expected to be introduced to and delivered in the Japanese market in the first half of 2027.

I’d like to summarize the exterior design features
based on the following three points.
1: The novelty and beauty of the bulging trapezoidal section (cross-section) in the middle of the body—reproduced with such precision that you can’t help but wonder, “Did they secretly bring back the clean lines of the original concept version by riding the wave of the ‘M Version’ hype?”
——> The effort to restore this highlight—which had been toned down during the standard version’s commercialization process—is truly remarkable.

* [Rakugo: Three-Theme Story] <The Future of Electric Vehicles> — Neue Klasse Quad Motor Long Wheelbase
Now, to wrap things up,
let me brilliantly conclude this with
a rakugo-style “three-topic story”!
The topics are:
* Neue Klasse
* Quad Motor
* Long Wheelbase
The theme is:
* [At a time of once-in-a-century upheaval, how can we turn innovation into genuine breakthroughs?]
The prompt is:
We expect a major work of approximately 8,000 characters—a predictive commentary on “The Near Future of EV Design,” centered on “mechanical structure and exterior design” from a designer’s perspective. Presented in the style of a three-topic rakugo story, it should take the form of a casual, everyday conversation between an active BMW designer in Germany and his neighbor, a ham artisan. In this relaxed atmosphere, the piece should explore every known possibility for electric vehicles. Please create this work. The overarching theme is: [At a time of once-in-a-century radical transformation, how can we turn innovation into genuine breakthroughs?] For the closing line, please elegantly tie back to the theme and conclude with a pun. The three topics are: Neue Klasse, quad motor, and long wheelbase. Please keep the in-depth exploration of the two possibilities for AI-based autonomous driving to a minimum; instead, focus strictly on new mechanisms for chassis design and the direction of exterior design… Thank you.
Well then, please bear with me for a moment…

Prologue: Twilight in Munich—Two Artisans
(Bang, bang, bang, bam!)
n
Yes, Munich—the ancient capital of Bavaria, Germany, boasting over a thousand years of history.
n
It is now the hour when the amber light of dusk is about to slant through the brick-lined streets that convey the weight of that history.
In a corner of this city, where the weight of tradition and the technology of the future coexist in a curious harmony,
in the courtyard of an apartment building, there was a man furrowing his brow as he intently scribbled with a pen in his sketchbook.
His name is Thomas. He is a current designer at BMW, a world-renowned automaker.
n
n
Just then, Hans—a master ham maker with thirty years of experience whose workshop is next door—arrived, looking dashing in his apron and clutching two mugs of cold beer.
He plopped down in a chair, peered at Thomas’s work, and burst out laughing.
n
“Hey, hey, Thomas, you’re making that scary face and staring at a blank sheet of paper again! You’re going to make the foam on my beer disappear. Come on, wet your whistle first!”
n
Thomas let out a deep sigh, took the mug, and downed it in one gulp.
n
“Phew… Thanks, Hans. Honestly, my head’s about to explode trying to figure out how to shape the ‘Neue Klasse’—the new standard for our future. The public is casually buzzing about a ‘once-in-a-century revolution,’ but for us designers on the front lines, it’s a massive upheaval—like throwing every automotive textbook we’ve ever known straight into the trash.”
n
Hans snorted and took a sip of his own beer.
n
“Once in a century, huh? In our world of ham artisans, a hundred years is the time we spend tirelessly preserving and refining the traditional flavor, but in your line of work, it’s the time to turn everything upside down? But listen, Thomas, an electric vehicle (EV)—isn’t it basically just an engine replaced by a motor, with batteries lined up under the floor? It’s just the way it moves that’s changing. As for the exterior, as long as we keep it sleek and stylish like always, that should settle the matter, right?”
n
“Well, Hans, that’s a huge mistake. When the engine disappears, it means the rules governing the car’s ‘framework (packaging)’ change from the ground up. The new chassis mechanism will force the exterior design to change. Today, borrowing the style of “Kodan”—a traditional Japanese storytelling art form—I’ll use the three major themes I’m grappling with—[Neue Klasse], [Quad Motor], and [Long Wheelbase]—to describe what the cars of the future will look like. As someone with the soul of a creator, you’ll surely understand how these elements intertwine to create not just a “new car,” but genuine “innovation (transformation).”」
(Papan!)
n
n
The First Theme: [Neue Klasse]—The Aesthetics of Subtraction and Redefining the Face—
n
n
N
n
n
n
n
n
n
n
n
n
“Now then, the first topic is the [Neue Klasse]. In German, this means ‘new class’ (or ‘new standard’). It’s the name of the legendary car that BMW launched in the 1960s, staking the company’s very future on it, and which defined the brand’s sporty image today. They went out of their way to revive it in this era of EVs. You can really tell how committed the company is. So, what is the core of the design that this Neue Klasse brings? In a nutshell, it’s the ‘aesthetics of subtraction’ and the ‘reversal of priorities’!”
n
Hans crossed his arms and nodded in admiration.
n
“A reversal of priorities, huh? How exactly does that change things?”
n
“Listen. In gasoline-powered cars up until now, the star of the show—the massive, hot, and proud ‘engine’ (internal combustion engine)—sat enthroned at the front. That’s why the ‘long nose, short deck’—a long hood and a tight, short rear—was a symbol of power and an absolute requirement for beautiful design. It was a sign of respect for the powerful ‘heart’ at the front, a tradition dating back to the days of horse-drawn carriages. But EVs don’t have that. Mechanically speaking, there’s simply no need to leave a long empty space under the hood anymore.”
n
“I see. So, we should shorten the front end and use that space to make the passenger compartment wider. That’s practical, isn’t it? In our line of work, too, customers are happier when we trim the excess fat off the bone to carve out a larger cut of the most delicious lean meat.”
n
“Exactly! But Hans, there’s a ‘huge trap’ here that drives designers crazy. You see, humans have had the ‘golden ratio of an engine-powered car’—something we’ve been accustomed to for decades, even centuries—unconsciously ingrained in our brains as ‘beautiful.’ So, if you just earnestly build a car with an extremely short front end, it ends up looking kind of squat and plump, like a ‘driving mayonnaise bottle’ or just a boring minivan. The sense of dynamism—like kicking off the ground—and the “class” expected of a luxury car, which we value above all else, would vanish. That’s what’s so terrifying.”
(Bang! Bang!)
n
“I see. So if you design the shape based solely on function, it just becomes a tool with absolutely no sex appeal. We need that sex appeal to tear down the Autobahn at 200 km/h. So, how do you maintain that beauty?”
n
“That’s exactly why, with the Neue Klasse, we’re elevating the ‘compromises of the mechanical system’ into a ‘new sense of tension’ in the exterior design. If there’s an opening in the front, we don’t just leave it as a blank space or wasted area. We carve it out as a sculptural mass of aerodynamics designed to smoothly channel airflow and press the tires against the road.
Furthermore, take the ‘kidney grille’—the face of BMW. It no longer needs to be merely a ‘radiator air intake’ for cooling the engine. The grille of the future will be reborn as a digital ‘eye’ that stares sharply at the ground, and as a ‘window of intelligence’ that elegantly conceals the sensors and cameras for autonomous driving. We’ll thoroughly strip away the unnecessary press lines that used to clump the surface. A muscular, solid volume—as if a single sheet of metal were tautly stretched. This is the first step in the future exterior design we’re presenting!”

Second Topic: [Quad Motor]—The Roar from the Four Corners, a Sturdy Frame—
(Bang! Bang! Bang!)
n
n
“Now, things are really going to pick up from here! The second theme is [Quad Motor]. ‘Quad’ means ‘four.’ In other words, it’s not just about placing one large motor on each of the front and rear axles. It’s the ultimate drive system, featuring one powerful, fully independent small motor on each of the four wheels!”
n
Hans’s eyes widened, and he set down his beer mug.
n
“Whoa, wait—four motors!? That’s a bit over the top. Usually, one big motor right in the middle is more than enough to power a car. Even Hans’s workshop smoker only needs one heat source—it’s enough to circulate heat throughout the whole thing.”
n
“That’s fine for smoking food (laughs). But listen, Hans—when it comes to a car that pushes ‘driving, turning, and stopping’ to the absolute limit, what do you think would happen if all four tires applied completely independent forces and could accelerate and decelerate—literally—‘in milliseconds’? It would enable cornering on a whole new level, far beyond conventional physical limits. Acrobatic maneuvers—like the right wheel surging forward while the left wheel is subjected to powerful braking—become effortless. We call this ‘absolute freedom of dynamic performance.’
And how does this powerful mechanism, the ‘Quad Motor,’ affect the exterior design? That’s exactly what we mean by ‘the visual shift of the center of gravity to the four corners’!”
n
“Shift to the four corners? Thomas, you’re using those complicated designer terms again. Translate that so I can understand it!”
n
“What I mean is, the heavy mechanisms that used to be located at the center of the car—whether front- or mid-engine—have completely disappeared, and that mass and energy are now fully distributed right next to the four wheels—that is, to the ‘four corners’ of the car. That means, from a design perspective, there’s no longer any need to emphasize the car’s ‘center.’ Instead, we must visually emphasize the image of ‘the four tires gripping the Earth’s surface with fierce, unyielding force!’
From a designer’s perspective, the dynamic bulges of the wheel wells (the fenders surrounding the tires) and the waistline of the body—which tapers in from there—take on greater significance than ever before. Future EVs equipped with quad motors must adopt proportions that make them appear to be crouching low and powerfully on the ground, much like a leopard on all fours, muscles tensed, stalking its prey. If the mechanics have expanded outward, then the design, too, must explode with energy outward. This overwhelming sense of “grip” and “wildness” is precisely the new expression of sportiness in the EV era, where the roar of the engine is gone!”

Topic 3: [Long Wheelbase]—The Giant Under the Floor, Visual Magic—
n
n
“Now, as we approach the climax, let’s move on to the third topic: [Long Wheelbase]. The wheelbase is the distance between the front and rear wheels. With EVs, in order to extend the driving range at all costs, you have to pack as many heavy, flat, massive batteries as possible into the ‘underfloor’ space between the front and rear tires. That’s why every EV is inevitably destined to have a long wheelbase, as well as a high and thick floor.”
n
Hans nodded vigorously and puffed out his chest proudly.
n
“Oh, I know that too! You widen the distance between the axles as much as possible to fit in lots of batteries, right? But Thomas, if you just widen the distance between the tires and make the floor thicker, won’t the whole car end up looking bulky and unsophisticated—like an ‘obese car’?”
n
“Exactly, Hans! That’s exactly the biggest hurdle that keeps us designers tossing and turning all night!”
(Bang, bang, bang!)
“Just imagine this. If the floor gets thicker, the overall height of the car goes up. If the wheelbase gets longer, it looks stretched out when viewed from the side. A car built strictly to meet technical requirements ends up being nothing more than a ‘heavy iron box’—not an agile athlete.
That’s why we designers make full use of the ‘magic of light and shadow’ (visual tricks).
Thanks to the long wheelbase, the door length and interior space are overwhelmingly more spacious than anything seen in the era of gasoline-powered cars. For passengers, this is a supreme evolution—they can stretch out and relax as if in a first-class lounge.
To make this “overwhelmingly long cabin” appear sleek and dynamic from the outside, we deliberately run sharp black lines along the side sills (the base beneath the doors) and deeply carve large, sculptural “shadows” (indentations) into the sides of the body that catch the light. By controlling the reflection of light, we visually “erase” the thickness of the underbody where the battery is packed, making the entire body look light and nimble, as if it were floating in the air!
Furthermore, by adopting a long wheelbase, we can drastically shorten the front and rear overhangs (the distance from the tires to the edges of the car)—this is our greatest asset. Because the front and rear are so tightly packed, when viewed from the side, the car appears much more compact than its actual dimensions, conveying a sense of agility—as if it’s about to dart forward at any moment.
We brilliantly turn the mechanical constraint of a “long floor” into an exterior characterized by “overwhelming elegance” and a “luxurious new interior space.” This is the answer born of our designers’ relentless determination in the face of the massive challenge posed by the long wheelbase!”

Core Question: How do we turn innovation into “true innovation”?
n
n
Hans remained silent for a moment, overwhelmed by Thomas’s impassioned speech. The breeze blowing across the courtyard gently rippled the foam on his beer. Hans exhaled deeply and looked at Thomas with a serious expression.
n
“I see… With the Neue Klasse, you’re creating the face of the future by stripping away the unnecessary; with the Quad Motor, you’re expressing a firm grip on all four corners; and with the long wheelbase, you’re creating supreme space and a taut form. I fully understand the ‘visual battle’ you designers are waging.
But listen, Thomas. As a senior figure in the world of manufacturing, may I ask you something fundamental?”
n
“What is it, Hans?”
n
“What you just said—as technology advances, other manufacturers will be able to imitate it perfectly, won’t they? Companies in Silicon Valley, even the new giant manufacturers in Asia, will do the same: lay flat batteries across the floor, attach four motors, and churn out cars with similar shapes at even lower prices in a flood-like wave.
This is a time of once-in-a-century transformation. What exactly is the difference between mere ‘change’—simply saying, ‘We used new technology to make a new kind of car’—and the ‘true innovation’ you’ve been talking about all this time?”
n
Thomas’s eyes widened for a moment, then he smiled happily.
n
“…Hans, you really do pinpoint exactly the ‘most painful issue’ we’ve been debating all night, day after day. That’s right—mere ‘innovation’ is nothing more than a replacement of technology. Saying ‘we switched from gas cars to electric cars’ or ‘we made the screen bigger’ is just a change in the means.
What’s absolutely necessary to elevate that to ‘true innovation’ is the ‘creation of meaning’ and its ‘establishment as culture.’”
n
“Creating meaning? Culture?”
(Bang! Bang!)
n
“That’s right! For example, no matter how perfect autonomous driving technology becomes in the future, we absolutely do not want to turn cars into ‘mere moving, sterile boxes’ or ‘smartphones on wheels.’ If that were to happen, the time we spend traveling would become ‘dead time’—time spent merely enduring and wasting away.
What we want to express through the Neue Klasse—with its new mechanics and design—is not a display of technology. It is the very essence of ‘the joy of putting people at the center, no matter what era we live in’!
The otherworldly driving experience delivered by Quad Motor isn’t about humans being controlled by digital systems; it’s for that mind-blowing thrill that comes from the driver’s will and the four wheels being in perfect sync. The spacious interior created by the long wheelbase isn’t just a place to sleep and wait—it’s a “theater” of a new culture of travel, designed to foster meaningful conversations with passengers and allow them to enjoy the beautiful world passing by outside the window from an unprecedentedly open perspective.
To perfectly translate technical innovation (mechanism) into raw human emotion (appearance and experience). The moment a user lays eyes on the car, they intuitively feel in their soul, “Ah, this is a living, breathing partner that will renew and enrich my life.”
Precisely because it is a brand with a 100-year history, it does not simply copy and cling to the designs of its past heritage. Instead, it forcefully extracts only the soul—the “joy of driving”—that lies at its very core and reconstructs it with the highest purity within a completely new, unknown body. This fusion of “the continuity of the soul and the discontinuity of form” is precisely the “true innovation” that only a historic brand can achieve—something up-and-coming manufacturers couldn’t imitate even if they tried their hardest!”
n
Hans slammed his beer mug down on the table and scratched his head vigorously.
n
“…Man, that’s tough. That’s some passionate stuff. But I totally get it. It’s exactly the same as how I make my ham. No matter how advanced the latest high-tech smoker is, or how perfectly it digitally controls temperature and humidity, simply saying, ‘The ham was smoked efficiently,’ means absolutely nothing. The real challenge is using that machine to strike the perfect balance between our traditional, bold richness—the kind that makes people say, ‘It’s got to be Hans’ ham’—and the light, refreshing aftertaste that today’s customers are looking for. Even if the tools change, unless the artisan’s spirit—the desire to move the people who eat it—remains the same, you can’t call that true innovation in flavor.”
n
“You’re absolutely right, Hans! Precisely because we’re living in a turbulent era where the inner workings are undergoing drastic changes, we must proclaim the brand’s identity even more strongly and with greater purity through its exterior (appearance) and the aura it exudes. Cars that can’t do that will be dragged into the fierce waves of price competition as mere ‘convenient commodities’ and eventually vanish, buried in the desert of history. We aren’t just making convenient tools. We’re creating a ‘culture’ right here and now that will be loved by humanity 100 years from now!”
(Bang, bang, bang, bang!)

Closing (Conclusion)
n
n
“Wow, Thomas, that was a wonderful speech that really stirred my heart. I now fully understand that the future of electric vehicles isn’t just a cold lump of batteries—it’s a huge gamble by passionate designers staking everything on the culture of the future. That single, distorted line you draw in your sketchbook will create a beautiful landscape on the autobahns of the future.
All right! After seeing such a passionate spirit of craftsmanship on display, I can’t just sit idly by as a craftsman myself. Tonight is special—let me treat you to a luxurious slice of the finest bone-in prosciutto, aged for a full three years in the prime spot at the back of my workshop. After all, whether it’s a car or prosciutto, the preparation of the invisible framework (mechanism) and the finishing touches on the exterior are what really matter!”

“Are you serious, Hans! Your aged prosciutto is the best in Munich—no, in all of Bavaria. That’s the ultimate luxury. But treating a mere designer like me to something so precious for free? It’s almost as if it’s going to snow tomorrow!”
n
Hans laughs it off heartily.
n
“Hahaha, what are you talking about? It’s a major investment in a young, genius designer who’s going to lead the world of the future. Besides, listening to you talk, a new concept for my ham-making suddenly clicked into place in my head. This is my way of thanking you.”
n
“Wow, a new concept for Hans’s ham? What kind of ham is it, exactly?”
n
“Oh, taking a cue from what you said, it’s a once-in-a-century revolutionary ham that shatters the boundaries of tradition!
First, we cut carefully selected, top-quality pork into four distinct cuts, then thoroughly massage each one in its own special salt barrel using the artisan’s intuition down to the millisecond. That’s the ‘Quad Monda (Massaged)’ mechanism you were talking about!
Up until now, we’d just tie them up haphazardly with short strings, but from now on, we’ll use extra-loooong, custom-made strings—stretched to the absolute limit—to tie them at even intervals, beautifully and elegantly. This is the very essence of the ‘Long String (Foil) Base’ aesthetic!
Then, we’ll toss them into the latest, state-of-the-art electric smoker and bring out a flavor that sets an entirely new standard unlike anything before. This is the ultimate next-generation brand that our Hans Workshop is sending 100 years into the future…”
n
“I see. So, what’s the name of this futuristic ham brand?”
n
Hans pounded his chest and declared loudly toward the setting sun.
n
“Hey! We don’t let technological innovation end as mere tools—we infuse it with the soul of the artisan to elevate it to authentic flavor. This is the genuine, absolute pinnacle of our workshop… ‘The Upper Class (Neue Klasse)’!”

*Other Edgy EV Designs…
BMW has launched the
“Neue Klasse” series as a redefinition
of the cars of the near future,
but other manufacturers are also beginning
to put forth various creative proposals.
I’d like to highlight a few based on my own personal preferences.
* Volvo EX30, 2024 (Silver)
(A simple, futuristic design that feels like a miniature version of the Polestar 3 from the Geely Group
――> It’s a bit on the small side for the U.S. market, so sales haven’t really taken off.)
* Polestar 3, (Blue-Gray)
(Boasts a majestic, three-dimensional form that makes the most of its long wheelbase and large-diameter tires
——> I often see one in my neighborhood, and I’m captivated by it every time…)
* BMW Neue Klasse Edition “Electric Version: X3”
(It’s a real shame that, unlike the sedan version, it ended up with the standalone kidney grille design typical of the 7 Series,
—> But the overall sleekness and the presence of the tires and wheels are fantastic.)
*Cadillac Lyriq EV, 2020 (Ice Blue)
(The interplay of focus and diffusion created by the intricate graphic designs on the front and rear fascias is delightfully dynamic.
---→ The sleek proportions unique to American cars are still very much intact.)
The future direction of exterior design for the latest EVs—
—is something we’ll definitely be keeping an eye on.
Regarding this blog and its content:
My goal in writing these blog posts is to clarify my personal, distinctive criteria for evaluation—including my somewhat unconventional perspectives—through my engagement with three-dimensional forms (including cooking), and to document how I have satisfied and fulfilled my curiosity and desire to explore “beauty and deliciousness.”
Therefore, while I pay the utmost attention to the numbers, years, and detailed data that appear in my articles, it is possible that I may occasionally make significant errors or misunderstandings. In particular, key specifications and model years in automotive articles can often be confusing, so I would appreciate it if you treated them as general references only.
For my part, I feel as though I’m inserting dates and data into the articles as objective material to create a “flow” that connects my personal assessments of exterior design and taste to the broader themes explored in the latter half of the piece. What I ultimately prioritize are the new “perspectives” and “unexpected connections between pieces of information” that emerge from the chaotic jumble of memories in my own mind. The various data points are needed secondarily as part of that “flow” to generate that momentum.
As a slight digression, in the world of rakugo—which I love—there’s a playful format called “san-dai-banashi,” where a performer weaves a single story using three topics solicited on the spot from the audience. I feel like I’m doing something similar here, using the characteristics of three-dimensional sculptures and (the taste of food) as my prompts. The countless ideas that flit through my mind during this process are completely unexpected and delightful; they often drastically change the content of future articles or lead to new developments.
How This Blog Works:
“Spots and Lines of Curiosity x Whimsical Mental Circuits = Unexpected New Developments”
This blog may be a bit self-indulgent, but I hope you’ll continue to follow along.
P.S.: To create the “flow” described above, I take as many photos as possible using my own die-cast cars and home-cooked meals. However, I do borrow the bare minimum of other illustrations and photos from other bloggers’ posts and company websites. (I edit them to fit the article’s content and post them at the lowest possible resolution.) If there are any issues, please contact me, and I will remove them immediately.
Addendum 2: You are free to use the photos of die-cast cars and other images (taken by me) featured in this blog’s posts in any way you like without permission. I create these posts with the understanding that my personal creativity belongs to me alone.
