経営難、真っ盛りのAMC(アメリカン・モータース)の、

#Subaru’s Great Invention!: “A Compact Car Wearing Trekking Shoes?”
As a one-time special episode,
I’d like to treat the “First-Generation Subaru XV”
as a [4-Door Coupe/SUV]
and share my personal thoughts.
The first time I saw this crossover,
I couldn’t help but exclaim,
“This is a great invention!!”
Mechanically, it’s probably impressive,
but personally, I wasn’t particularly wowed by
the Subaru Impreza’s chassis—
they simply raised it by about 15 cm and fitted it with larger tires,
yet it gained a completely transformed stance and sporty feel—it was as if
*they’d switched from
*everyday tennis shoes
to serious hiking boots for mountain trails—
achieving a complete image makeover.
#Subaru Impreza Sport, 2012
[Everyday Tennis Shoes]
#Subaru XV Hybrid, 2012
[Hiking Boots]
At the same time,
as someone whose livelihood depends on exporting watches,
I can’t help but be reminded of the appearance of Casio’s G-Shock.
What struck me as an invention was this:
products that retain the basic functionality of athletic shoes, wristwatches, and the like,
while adding an “exoskeleton”—I feel this is a monstrously effective product concept that sparks an intense desire to buy.
Applying that product concept to automobiles is
――> A major invention!
Just like with sneakers and wristwatches,
* Off-road version,
* Mountain climbing version,
* Beach buggy version,
* City jogging version,
* Camping version,
and so on—
I feel this is a versatile concept capable of producing an almost infinite number of variations.
Furthermore, as limited editions,
* High-performance, tuned-up engine specifications, or
* Special color editions designed by famous artists, etc.,

n
The first-generation Subaru XV (Impreza XV / 2012 model, the predecessor to the current Crosstrek) is an extremely important milestone in the history of automotive design that defined the “symbolization of functionality.”
The design team, led by then-Chief Designer Kazuhiro Nasu, was not aiming to create merely a “raised-height version of the Impreza.” Rather, their goal was to establish a new language for the “urban crossover” that perfectly fused urban style with outdoor toughness.

n We’ll thoroughly dissect the evolution of design—from the first-generation XV in 2012 to the latest “Crosstrek Wilderness (WILDERNESS)” released in 2024—and explore the contemporary trends in product design it embodies: the “Nike sneakerization,” “trekking bootification,” and “G-SHOCK-ification” of automobiles, all from a designer’s perspective.

1. 2012: The First-Generation XV—Design Innovation and Three-Dimensional Composition
N
n
The greatest achievement of the XV, introduced in 2012, was its ability to create a completely different character through design while leveraging the excellent proportions of its base vehicle, the “Impreza Hatchback.”
n
n
Contrast with the reassuring feel of a clamshell:
n
The designers conceived the XV’s body as a “solid block.” Viewed from the side, the character line extending from the front fender to the rear does not run parallel to the ground but flows powerfully with a slight upward slope toward the rear. The most notable design highlight is the “black plastic wheel arch protectors (cladding)” that encircle the lower portion of the body.
* Visual lift-up effect: By not only raising the ride height but also boldly positioning the black resin parts, the body appears slimmer, while conversely emphasizing the strength of the suspension.
* A symbol of toughness: The “tool-like” quality—the ability to drive without fear of scratches—is expressed through the contrast of the “raw black” material texture, which is unpainted.
n
n
An “urban” feel created by “geometry”:
nnn
The XV’s front fascia is based on Subaru’s traditional “hexagonal grille,” but the mesh is coarser than that of the Impreza, giving it a three-dimensional shape. The headlights feature a sharp design known as “Hawk Eye,” giving them a crisp look that stands out against the city’s nightscape.
n
Particularly noteworthy is the striking design of the 17-inch aluminum wheels.
n
The geometric “star-shaped (or shuriken-shaped)” design, with its striking contrast between the silver machined finish and the black paint, was extremely innovative in the automotive world at the time.
n
*The design aims to create a visual effect where rings of light appear to float while the car is in motion.
* As a result, the design succeeded in giving the vehicle a light, nimble look—more like “pop and fashionable sneakers” than a “rough-and-tumble 4×4.”

The seeds sown by the 2012 XV have, over the course of more than 10 years, grown into a major trend in automotive design as a whole. This is the “G-SHOCK-ization” —a synchronicity with modern lifestyle products such as the “trekking boot” and “Nike sneaker” trends.
n
n
① The “G-SHOCK-ization” of automobiles: Excessive visualization of functions and protection
n
n
Casio’s G-SHOCK created the value of absolute toughness by encasing a delicate precision instrument—the watch—in a “block of resin.”
The design of the XV—and the current Crosstrek—embodies precisely this “G-SHOCK” logic.
n
Stylizing Protective Elements: The black resin on the wheel arches of the 2012 XV has expanded in area and become more complex in shape with each passing year. This is a technique that elevates the “function” of protecting vulnerable parts of the body into the “centerpiece (icon)” of the design.
Solid, Block-Like Presence: By sharply accentuating the press lines (folds in the sheet metal) and incorporating powerful details reminiscent of bolted fasteners, the design evokes the “desire to own” associated with digital gadgets—a sense of it being a coveted piece of gear.

In the past, trekking boots (mountaineering boots) were specialized gear used solely for climbing mountains. However, today, brands like Danner and Salomon have become deeply ingrained among young people as urban fashion items.
n
Functional Beauty: The defining features of trekking boots—“thick soles (for traversing rough terrain),” “rubber mudguards (cladding),” and “eye-catching shoelaces (colorful accents)”—align perfectly with the XV’s design composition.
The Extraordinary in Everyday Life: Just as people wear hiking boots even when walking on paved city streets, the XV conveyed the narrative (emotional value) that “you can head out into nature at any time” through its design.

nNike’s sneaker culture, epitomized by the “Air Max” of the 1990s, proved that the pursuit of functionality could become a street icon in its own right. The XV was a pioneer in transforming the automobile from “mobility (a means of transportation)” to “sneakers (footwear for self-expression).”

Introduction of Pop Colors: The “Tangerine Orange Pearl” and “Desert Khaki” that served as the XV’s signature colors in 2012 were extremely unconventional choices for a car at the time. Earth tones and vivid primary colors were the very same color schemes found in Nike’s limited-edition sneakers and outdoor apparel.
Blending into the Streets: Rather than relying on a sense of luxury (through the heavy use of chrome plating), the approach of emphasizing matte finishes and color contrasts perfectly resonated with the feeling young people have when they pick out their favorite sneakers and head out onto the streets.

3. 2024 Crosstrek “WILDERNESS”: The Pinnacle of Symbolism
n
n
n
The “gear-ification” trend that began with the first-generation XV in 2012 reached its ultimate culmination with the 2024 model “Crosstrek WILDERNESS.”
b
The Wilderness is Subaru’s toughest trim level, marketed primarily in the North American market. From a design perspective, it can be described as “a creation that takes the symbols of functionality and distorts (or emphasizes) them even more radically.”
n
Overwhelming Protection (The Perfection of the “G-SHOCK-ization”)
n
In the 2012 XV, the black resin parts were merely “trim” around the body, but in the 2024 Wilderness, they have expanded to cover a vast area—enough to envelop most of the front bumper and the majority of the fenders.
n
The front grille features a more three-dimensional honeycomb pattern, with hexagonal motifs proliferating down to the finest details.
A “matte black decal (anti-glare sheet)” is applied to the center of the hood to reduce sunlight reflection. While this is a standard feature of full-fledged rally cars, it also serves as a powerful visual message (symbol) that “this car is a professional’s tool.”
n
n
Copper (copper-colored / anodized-style) accents
n
What defines the Wilderness’s design is the “copper (zinc-copper) accent color” placed at key points on the body.
This color, featured on the base of the roof rails, the tow hook cover, and the side logos, evokes the texture of “anodized” metal—the same finish used on professional mountaineering gear and carabiners.
n
While the 2012 XV expressed a sneaker-like vibe with its pop “orange” color, the 2024 Wilderness shifts toward a more specialized, heavy-duty outdoor gear tone with “copper.”
Aggressive Footwork (The Ultimate in Trekking Boot-Style Design)
n
The Wilderness is equipped with Yokohama “GEOLANDAR A/T” all-terrain tires featuring white lettering, and the wheels feature a custom matte black design.
The ride height (ground clearance) has also been raised further, and its silhouette is the very embodiment of “a genuine Vibram mountaineering boot with deep lugs designed to grip the mud.”
n

4. Summary from the Designer’s Perspective:
n
n
N
The Subaru XV (Crosstrek)’s design journey spanning more than 12 years is a prime example that most beautifully captures the shift in 21st-century consumer values—from “premium” to “utility” (functionality and a sense of practicality).
n
n
The first-generation XV, launched in 2012, pioneered a new genre in automotive design by placing “new symbols”—such as plastic protectors and innovative wheel designs—on the excellent canvas provided by the Impreza. It was, in essence, a proposal for a lighthearted lifestyle that seamlessly moves between the city and nature, just as one might do while wearing their favorite pair of Nike sneakers.
n
And in the evolution leading up to the 2024 Wilderness, that design delved deeper into the realm of functional beauty found in professional tools—such as “G-SHOCK” watches and “trekking boots”—becoming more profound and essential.
n
Subaru’s designers did not simply follow trends. It is precisely because Subaru possesses “genuine technology (the foundation)”—all-wheel drive (AWD)—which it has cultivated over many years that the design elements (such as protectors and color schemes) applied on top of it never come across as fake, and continue to captivate people’s hearts with strong persuasiveness. The XV/Crosstrek can be said to be the most successful textbook example of the “fusion of toughness and style” in modern product design.

*Exterior Design Features: The Leone’s Comeback?
When I was a kid,
I often saw modified 4-door hatchback Leones in my neighborhood
that had been lifted by about 15–20 cm.
I remember feeling a sense of excitement every time I saw them.
Later, as an adult in LA,
I found myself caught up in the ups and downs
of the “Eagle”—
a four-wheel-drive off-road vehicle
from AMC (American Motors), which was then in the midst of severe financial difficulties—
and was captivated by its distinctive, slightly quirky coolness.
I’d like to highlight the following five
exterior design features of the “Subaru XV,”
which inherited the DNA of the Leone and
the Eagle
across generations.
1: The birth of a future star, born of chance—simply by fitting larger tires (which were too small on the Impreza Sport) and raising the ride height significantly, it achieved an incredible sense of upgrade! ――> The AMC Eagle also didn’t make much of an impression during its “Concord” era before the ride height was raised, did it?
2: The clamshell-like sense of security provided by the “cladding” covering the lower section of the entire body, combined with just the right balance of playful, tattoo-like flair and sportiness――> Although the “cladding” gradually became more exaggerated afterward… I prefer the first-generation version the most.
3: The coexistence of the front fascia’s sharp, sporty look and the reassuring sense of ruggedness
4: The intentionally high-waisted rear design and the taillights positioned at the very edges, creating a striking contrast
5: The incredible “stance” created by the large tires, wheelbase, and wide track
Let’s take a closer look at each of these
with photos.
1: The birth of a “future star”—a serendipitous creation that achieved a tremendous sense of upgrade simply by fitting larger tires (which were too small on the Impreza Sport) and raising the ride height!
(The fact that the Impreza Sport already had a relatively long wheelbase from the start really paid off here.)
――> The AMC Eagle also didn’t make much of an impression during its “Concord” era before the ride height was raised, did it?
2: The clamshell-like sense of security provided by the [cladding] covering the lower section of the entire body, combined with a playful, tattoo-like aesthetic and just the right balance of sportiness.
――> Although the [cladding] gradually became more over-the-top afterward… I still prefer the first-generation version the most.
3: The coexistence of the front fascia’s sharp, sporty look and the reassuring sense of ruggedness
4: The intentional high-waisted look of the rear design and the taillights positioned at the very edges, creating a contrast
5: The incredible “stance” created by the large tires, wheelbase, and wide track
Now then,
I’d like to share a personal experience.
* “Me” and the “2nd-generation Subaru XV”: A friend’s beloved car
(The majestic sight of a 3rd-generation Subaru XV I spotted in the parking lot of a local Catholic church)
(This is the latest model CrossTrek I found in the parking lot next to Memorial Park Station on the Metro Line.)
For me, Subaru’s Crosstrek series—
whether it’s the second, third, or fourth generation—
is like a refreshing soft drink:
“Just looking at it makes me feel like I’ve hit the jackpot.”
It’s the kind of car I always want to take pictures of whenever I get the chance!
In this way, it has become Subaru’s cash cow series—
one that continues to evolve and is very much a work in progress!
#Scale Model Experience:
*Manufactured by Yamasan, approx. 1/100 scale, [Subaru Automobile Promotional Item] Plastic Keychain, 3rd-generation Subaru XV (Orange)
(The lights can be turned on using a switch on the chassis; the overall sculpting is accurate, and the sharp detailing really stands out.
――> It’s a shame the scale is a bit off, though…)
*Manufactured by Wit’s, 1/43 resin ready-to-display model, 2nd-generation Subaru Crosstrek XV (Metallic Lime)
(It’s a rare treat to hold an accurate 3D model of this generation of the XV.
――> It’s a shame that the molding is a bit rough and that the metallic paint has a clear coat over it.)
Well then, have you been waiting for this?
It’s time for the “Three-Theme Story”!
*Three-Theme Story: G-Shock, Great Invention, AMC Eagle
Once again, we’ve got a set of
completely out-of-the-blue topics.
I wonder how this will turn out…
#Topics:
* G-Shock
* Great Invention
* AMC Eagle
I’ll do my best
together with “Gemini-kun”!!
Please write a 2,000-character piece explaining the exterior design of the 2012 Subaru XV Hybrid in the style of a rakugo (traditional Japanese storytelling) conversation between a designer and a seamstress at Onizuka Shoe Store, within 2,000 characters. The overarching theme is: “A horse from a gourd = The Impreza Sport, which hadn’t been making much of a splash until then, became a huge hit simply by raising its ride height and fitting it with oversized tires.” Please revisit this theme in the conclusion to wrap things up neatly. The topics are: G-Shock, Great Inventions, and the AMC Eagle.
This is a rakugo-style dialogue (exchange) between a designer (a young perfectionist) and a sewing craftsman (a foul-mouthed veteran foreman) at Onizuka Shoe Store, discussing the exterior design of the Subaru XV (the first-generation model, including the hybrid model released in 2012).

[Performance Title: A Subaru from a Gourd]
n
n
(From the left side of the stage, the designer “Kawaji”; from the right, the shoemaker “Itokichi.” A conversation while working in their workshop.)
n
n
Kawaji: “Wow, Master. Take a look at this shoe design. It’s a sketch for a new model our shop is releasing soon. What do you think? I’ve made the edge really stand out and given the sole a thick, chunky look!”
n
Itokichi: “Whoa, whoa, Kawaji. What on earth is that? It’s just a snazzy pair of sneakers for walking around town, isn’t it? You’ve just made the sole ridiculously thick and slapped on some clunky rubber. The pattern inside is the same old one. You’re cutting corners.”
n
Kawaji: “Calling it cutting corners is an insult! This is the ‘horse from a gourd’ design that’s all the rage in the automotive world right now.”
n
Itokichi: “A horse from a gourd? Don’t joke around. If a horse suddenly popped out of a gourd—a plant from the cucurbit family—that’d be a huge commotion.”
n
Kakuji: “It’s a metaphor, a metaphor! Basically, it means that a model that wasn’t originally all that impressive suddenly became a huge hit just by adding a few tweaks. A great example is the ‘Subaru XV’ that came out in 2012—especially the hybrid version that came out later; that’s the best.”
n
Itokichi: “Subaru? You mean that company that only makes those boxy cars? What kind of great invention did the XV come up with?”
n
Kawaji: “It didn’t use any groundbreaking technology, at least not in terms of appearance. It was based on the ‘Impreza Sport’—which, with all due respect, is a serious, no-nonsense, somewhat plain hatchback. But they raised the ride height by a full 20 centimeters (to a minimum ground clearance of 200 mm), wrapped black plastic protectors (arch cladding) all the way around the fenders, and slapped on some seriously rugged 17-inch alloy wheels. …That’s basically all they did!”
n
Itokichi: “What’s that supposed to be? It’s just a pair of platform shoes. Secret boots, that’s what they are.”
n
Kawaji: “But the fact that it doesn’t look like just a pair of platform shoes is a testament to the designer’s skill! Boss, you know the ‘G-Shock’ watch, right? To protect the LCD screen inside, they encased it in rugged resin—and that rugged look actually became a huge hit because people thought, ‘It’s tough and cool!’ The XV is the same. The black resin protectors accentuate the body’s vivid color and instantly give it that ‘tough, go-anywhere tool’ vibe. Plus, on the hybrid model, the headlight lenses have a smoked finish, which also gives it a more refined look.”
n
Itokichi: “Hmm… But come to think of it, cars that are just raised off the ground have been around forever. Those American ones… what were they called? You know, the old ones.”
n
Kawaji: “Whoa, you’re really knowledgeable. You mean the ‘AMC Eagle,’ right? It came out in the late 1970s—the original crossover, where they raised the ride height of a passenger car and added four-wheel drive. But that one was ahead of its time and a bit too rugged. What the Subaru XV did so well was its sense of ‘urban camouflage’—making it look exquisitely stylish even when driving around town. Especially that vibrant orange color called ‘Tangerine Orange Pearl’! A color that flashy would stick out like a sore thumb on a regular Impreza. But paired with those chunky black suspension components, it looked just as pop and stylish as outdoor gear.”
n
Itokichi: “I see. So even with the usual plain pattern, if you make the sole thicker, add black leather reinforcements (patches), and stitch it up with flashy thread, it looks like the latest trekking shoes, right?”
n
Kawaji “Exactly! Completely changing the frame is a huge undertaking and costs a fortune. But precisely because we had that existing ‘Impreza’—a four-wheel-drive base with great handling—all we had to do was raise the ride height and put on big tires to create a masterpiece that everyone wants. It’s truly a ‘great invention’ in design!”
n
Itokichi: “Wow, that’s impressive. A plain, unremarkable base was transformed with just a little ingenuity. …All right, I get it. I’ve got my pride as a craftsman, too. Let’s prove that ‘turning a gourd into a horse’ concept with these shoes.”
n
Kawaji: “Whoa, Boss! Are you really going to do it? What kind of twist?”
n
Itokichi: “Those shoes with the lackluster design you brought in—I raised the soles significantly, attached extra-large rubber, and incorporated that ‘big, big’ thing you’ve been going on about into the soles. This is definitely going to be a huge hit!”
n
Kawaji: “Whoa! A gimmick like that in the soles? What exactly did you put in there?”
n
Itokichi: “Just like the challenge we were given earlier. Since you kept saying ‘big, big’… instead of ‘big tires,’ I stuffed them with ‘big money.’ It makes a rustling sound every time you step on it—now that’s what I call a real ‘hidden surprise’ (a sole stuffed with bills).”
n
Kawaji: “No, Master… With that, my travel money will decrease (get torn) every time I walk. It’s a pair of shoes where my money slips away—a real ‘double whammy’!”
n
n
Looks like I’m going to end up penniless… (laughs)

About This Blog and Its Content:
My goal in writing these blog posts is to clarify my personal, distinctive criteria for evaluation—including my somewhat unconventional perspectives—as shaped by my involvement with three-dimensional art (including cooking), and to document how I have satisfied and fulfilled my curiosity and desire to explore “beauty” and “deliciousness.”
Consequently, while I pay the utmost attention to the numbers, dates, and detailed data that appear in my articles, it is possible that I may occasionally make significant errors or misunderstandings. In particular, key specifications and dates in automotive articles can often be confusing, so I would appreciate it if you would consider them for reference only.
For my part, I feel as though I’m inserting dates and data into the articles as objective material to create a “flow” that connects my personal assessments of exterior design and taste to the broader themes explored in the latter half of the piece. What I ultimately prioritize are the new “perspectives” and “unexpected connections between pieces of information” that emerge from the chaotic jumble of memories in my own mind. The various data points are needed secondarily as part of that “flow” to generate that momentum.
As a slight digression, in the world of rakugo—which I love—there’s a playful format called “san-dai-banashi,” where a performer weaves a single story using three topics solicited on the spot from the audience. I feel like I’m doing something similar, using the characteristics of three-dimensional sculptures and (the flavors of dishes) as my prompts. The countless ideas that flit through my mind during this process are completely unexpected and delightful; they often drastically change the content of future articles or lead to new developments.
How This Blog Works:
“Spots and Lines of Curiosity x Whimsical Mental Circuits = Unexpected New Developments”
This blog may be a bit self-indulgent, but I hope you’ll continue to follow along.
P.S.: To create the “flow” described above, I take as many photos as possible using my own die-cast cars and home-cooked meals. However, I do borrow the bare minimum of other illustrations and photos from other bloggers’ posts and company websites. (I edit them to fit the article’s content and post them at the lowest possible resolution.) If there are any issues, please contact me, and I will remove them immediately.
Addendum 2: You are free to use the photos of die-cast cars and other images (taken by me) featured in this blog’s posts in any way you like without permission. I create these posts with the understanding that my personal creativity belongs to me alone.
